You are watching a baby bivalve (possibly a mussel) BREATHING!! The gills inside this animal have cilia - beating furiously and drawing nutrient and oxygen rich water into the body for gas exchange and nutrient extraction. AND WE’RE WATCHING IT HAPPEN!

These gorgeous little guys are hooded shrimp (Athanas nitescens) and I’ve seen them in maroon and a dashing teal. The last photo shows a male with his gym-ready claws (thanks to Will Nash for the photo).

There were lots of Amphipods at this week. All different sizes! I didn’t bring any home to ID (quite honestly IDing amphipods is bloody frustrating!) so I’ve no idea on species!

This long-spined sea scorpion (Taurulus barbalis) is understandably cross with me. When they feel threatened, they’ll puff themselves up, looking bigger and sticking out their spines. I promise I was very gentle - I wanted a closer look to check species as its size and markings threw me a bit.

A shore crab (Carcinus maenas) mid-moult. This crab will be very careful about who he opens the door to whilst his soft, new carapace hardens. He’s an easy and tasty treat for all sorts of hungry predators.
