Summer Tanager
This first-of-season male is excited, calling for a mate—you can see his crest is raised as is his tale. I have not seen a female around yet. Summer Tanagers have always been hard for me to photograph and this image is far from perfect (with a terrible background),but does show off his bright red color (not enhanced by me) and pose.

Western Tanager

I head a bird sing high in a cottonwood tree this morning. I couldn't see it for the sun. At first I didn't recognize the song, but then it came to me (and I’ve confirmed by listening to a sample.)
This would be the first-of-the-season Western Tanager. They pass through on the way to higher and/or more northern elevations generally in early May, but end of April is not unprecedented. 2010 was a banner year with up to 8 birds staying for a week and providing many photo ops. This photo is from that year.

There is a road ;not too far from where I live where I take the dogs for walks. Large cottonwood trees grow alongside the road and birds congregate in these big trees. In the years I have been living where I am now I have seen a horned owl, and any number of hawks. This morning there were two raptors, and I am assuming these are hawks, but have not IDd them as of yet. One bird appeared to be very scruffy. Feathers out of place. The other bird was fine. Can this be a pair? Male and female?

The White-crowned Sparrow flock that over-winters in my yard are singing up a storm this morning—much more than usual. Guessing they're practicing for courtship. They will begin moving north in the next few weeks, perhaps flying as far as Canada and the Taiga.

Ash-throated Flycatcher
I heard the first of the season in the Rio Grande bosque while on my bike ride yesterday afternoon. Their call is distinctive—sounding similar to a pea whistle (sports whistle or police whistle in US).
