Eduard Seler illustrated a similar #tapir piece in 1904 (Antiquities of Guatemala, fig. 23d, p. 106) with a whole body and wearing a shell necklace. Has anyone seen the original or any others like it? #Plumbate vessels were usually manufactured in multiples so there should be others...?

For #WorldTapirDay: #Plumbate vessel "depicting a shaman or priest wearing an enormous #tapir head headdress, his face peeking out from inside of the creature's mouth." #Maya/#Toltec, c. 900 - 1200 CE, 8.8 x 6.4cm. Baird's Tapir is the largest terrestrial mammal native to Maya territory.

A few years ago, @irene and I met this extremely friendly and extremely fuzzy mountain tapir, Carlotta. Sadly, Carlotta is no longer with us, and there are (IIRC) only four mountain tapirs left in North America.

For #WorldTapirDay my #linocut Malayan tapirs, adult and baby. There are four types of tapir; this linocut is of both an adult and baby Malayan tapir. Tapirs always look very dapper, if improbable, in their black and white coat. The adults with their white saddles look like an aardvark crossed with an elephant, wearing a tuxedo.
