In my translation work, I came across a research movement called 当事者研究, often simply transliterated as tojisha kenkyu. It's described well here: u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/whyutokyo/ind
One name given to it in the article is "Science of Self," since it means studies by the people who are themselves in the situation being studied (those with autism, or disability, gender-related minorities, etc.).
Is this study approach common outside Japan? If so, what is it generally called in English?
