袴田巌さんの経験からわかるのは、#死刑 は命を奪うことにほかならないのに、執行までの日々の過酷さも事実上の刑となっていることだ。身体より先に心を殺す刑と指摘されるゆえんだ。
政府は人々が死刑について意見を形成するために必要な情報を十分に提供してきたといえるだろうか。情報は法務省に集中しているが、刑場を報道機関に公開したのは民主党政権時代の１回だけだ。執行状況などの情報公開請求にはほぼ黒塗りの文書で応じるなど、後ろ向きな姿勢を貫いてきた。
日本弁護士連合会は昨年１１月、死刑に代わる新たな最高刑として終身拘禁刑を創設する提言をまとめた。議論の土台になる。…執行を担った法務省幹部が公述人になり、個人の意見として死刑廃止を求めたこともある。執行を一時停止し、知見を集め自由に意見を交わす。その機会を今こそ逃すべきではない。

なぜ日本では #死刑 が支持され続けるのか。著者はいくつかの要因を指摘するが、その一つが、人権教育の失敗だ。日本で行われる「相手の気持ちになって考えましょう」という感情面からの人権教育では、共感できない人の人権は権利と捉えにくい。どんな人でも憲法で基本的人権が保障されているという理解も、心許ない。
