Got behind with the #1001albums this week, what with all the house moving. So today I'm going to catch back up by listening to 7 albums in a row.
Luckily there's two albums in there I already know will be five stars (Rubber Soul and Unknown Pleasures) but currently I'm having to struggle through Stereo MCs' Connected. An album which reminds me of 90 music in the worst ways!
Favorite Finds from #1001Albums cont'd;
Mid 70s Edition
Joni Mitchell - Court & Spark:
Just when I think I know where she's going her harmonies prove otherwise
Genesis (Gabriel era):
Peter Gabriel's distinctly-English prog rock fairytales pack such an emotional wallop
Dylan - Blood on the Tracks:
Back w/ a vengeance, each song a sharpened arrow to the heart (or other exposed organ)
Modern Lovers ('76):
You only know one guy at the party...fortunately he's in the band & it's Jonathan Richman

Day 390 of listening to an album per day of the 1001 Albums You Need To Hear Before You Die brought me 36 Chambers by the Wu-Tang Clan.
It's 29 years ago that my brother, who curated the hip-hop part of our teenage years, walked into my room with his new discovery I had to listen to.
Re-listening this now, all these years later, I notice that none of the raw, unvarnished grit has worn away from this album. It has fully stood the test of time with its minimalistic samples, spooky piano riffs and most of all the incredible quality of all 9 MC's.
A stone cold classic in its genre. And my first 5* for a hip-hop album in this list.

RYM lists The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady as the #1 jazz album? 😮

today’s record is Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home, and we decided to listen to it together as a family. my daughter’s preliminary review is “it’s…an experience”
I think I’m gonna post my reviews as I go along on here under a CW with #1001albums, so feel free to mute if you don’t care about my bad music opinions
One year of one album a day, randomly generated from the #1001Albums you need to hear before you die through https://1001albumsgenerator.com has brought me much joy this year. It has given me many (re-)discoveries of amazing #albums , bands that have been in peripherals but I've never listened to before and #music genres I've come to understand better.
Still over two years to go to finish the entire list, but this has been an amazing journey already.
Biggest surprise of #1001albums so far?
Ghostface Killah. Pretty damn good. Brassy, Funky and Groovy.
Been doing #1001Albums and The New Tango by Astor Piazolla and Gary Burton was one I had missed.
Caught up with it today and whew what a listen. #jazz

Favorite Finds from #1001Albums cont'd;
Early 70s Edition
Harry Nilsson -- Nilsson Schmilsson:
a heady, sometimes smoldering/sometimes irrepressible fireball of rock glory
Randy Newman -- Sail Away:
deceptively friendly, beautiful songs wrapped around the bleakest of subjects
War -- The World is a Ghetto:
fit my wavelength to a degree I wasn't ready for
Deep Purple -- Made in Japan:
takes an already-solid studio album and just slays Japan with it

Here are the next five albums from the list I'll be spinning over the next week or so.
Some very interesting listening coming up.

A Night at the Opera by Queen.
A cracking album.
After listening to the three Queen albums in the list so far, I'm struck by how many songs were not sung by Mercury. They really shared the lead vocals and writing duties throughout.
The use of the Bohemian Rhapsody in Wayne's World was a massive turning point in my musical journey. The soundtrack CD opened my 12 year old poptastic eyes to Hendrix, Cooper, Sabbath and the Chilli Peppers. “WE’RE NOT WORTHY! WE’RE NOT WORTHY!”
I listened to Neil Young's Tonight's the Night three times on the bounce last night. The sound and lyrics really grabbed me.
Reading up about its creation afterwards explains a melancholy I felt. He was dealing with fame and the death of two friends from drug misuse. Writing and performing the songs in a drunken haze. #1001Albums https://youtu.be/wjluWjyRgoU
The five #1001Albums I shall be listening to this week (in theory, as if an album clicks all bets could be off for the others.). I give them all a good couple of spins and never know if I am about to discover a new favourite album. I'm at 1976 in the 1001 list. Jump in and join me!
Seemed like a good time to try Mastodon. Putting hashtags of random stuff I’m likely to post about in case anyone else is into it: #judaism #sangabrielmountains #zentangle #zen #simoneweil #doommetal #blackmetal #1001albums #theatlantic #angrymetalguy #baritoneukulele #weirdstudies
