Today I reached my 100 day streak on Duolingo learning Italian. I never expected to enjoy it as much as I do. Amazingly the Italian Giallo novel I got off eBay also arrived today, I might not be able to understand it but reading it out loud should help as I progress.

Day 45

In 2021, NASA worked with the German Space Agency (DLR) to harvest crops in the EDEN ISS greenhouse in Antarctica. NASA researcher Jess Bunchek grew a range of hydroponic crops, including kohlrabi and broccoli. Jess grew ‘Española Improved’ chile peppers in Antarctica while astronauts grew them on the ISS! Basil pesto was a favourite with the Antarctica crew.

In March 2014, ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst was at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Tsukuba Space Center, training with the Plant Gravity Sensing investigation. Day 42

ESA's Expose-E experiment launched to the ISS in 2008 and was attached to the outside of the Columbus module. It exposed seeds and other organisms to the harsh conditions of space.

23% of the 2100 Arabidopsis and tobacco seeds were still able to produce viable plants when they returned to Earth 1.5 years later.

Day 41

In 2008, ESA astronaut Léopold Eyharts began the first experiment in the European Columbus lab on the ISS. The Waving and Coiling of Arabidopsis Roots at Different g-levels (WAICO) experiment investigated the effect of gravity on plant root growth.

Day 40

This image shows the Tropi experiment inside ESA's miniature space greenhouse, the European Modular Cultivation System (EMCS). 📸 Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA

The Tropi experiments studied how Arabidopsis plants respond and grow towards light in microgravity and lunar and Martian gravity levels. Unexpectedly, they found that plants respond differently to red and blue light under simulated Moon and Mars conditions!

Day 39

In 2014, ESA's Gravi-2 experiment grew 768 lentil seeds on the International Space Station, to see at what gravity level the seedlings begin to show growth differences. The seeds were kept spinning for 30 hours at four different centrifuge speeds, and observed as they grew.

Gravi-2 showed us how plants use calcium to signal root growth under a range of gravity levels.

Day 37

ESA's Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) mission will provide global maps of vegetation fluorescence, which can be converted into an indicator of photosynthetic activity. This new information will improve our understanding of how much carbon is stored in plants and their role in the carbon and water cycles. FLEX is due to launch in 2025.
