Tonight's watch is Thir13en Ghosts.

I understand it is one of those terrible early aughts horror movies that is a cult favourite because of course it is, Matthew Lillard is in it.

I'm excited to finally watch it.

Re: Last Boost
I'm ok with some ambivalence in stories but I didn't like how this was handled, or maybe I didn't like the story? I was looking for a logic to its story and while I'm certain there is one that I'm missing, I found the inconsistencies jarring. Of course in my attempts to write spoiler free reactions, this is probably just as abstruse. That said, Kim Coates' voice is intoxicating in this as he reminded me of an evil Robert Krulwich.

Re: last boost
So this was a bit all over. It is BETTER and more complex than it has any right to be with the twisting goals but I appreciate there wasn't an attempt to drag out Eric's existence as a mystery. The kills were hilarious and the real villain was capitalism as usual. But maybe stores shouldn't stock flame throwers?!
Also who would shop at a mall that had car explosions?

Currently watching the original Children of the Corn. I'm pretty sure it's been almost 40 years since I've seen it, and so far I remember nothing, so I think I can count it as a first time watch for

Re: last boost
I don't understand the harsh reviews it received. I thought this PG13 horror did well with its story's logic. It was a bit visually dark, the kids didn't really sound like kids, but it's perfectly serviceable. I even gave myself a charliehorse with a scare. Mild copaganda, though, but it was half a concern.

Well this was a movie to watch while living in a world with as many health failures as COVID provided.

Re: Last boost
The 2005 film is one of my all time bad films. I watch just for the Rock yelling, "Semper Fi, Mother fucker" but this is my first time seeing Annihilation and I was SHOCKED that it had more accurate lore and was so universally hated. I think it's an actually decent sci fi horror film. I was impressed with Dominick Mafham. I'm a Doom nut. I know the lore. Yes it was tweaked but it was a genuinely fun movie. BFG could have been more effective but oh well.

The temperature today (in celsius) is gonna be in the 30s with high humidity - so I'm staying home and watching winter horror films.

First up The Apology on Shudder.

Re: Last Boost
Just silly fun. I'm still waiting for the damn OST cassette I bought in July (it was pre order, though). I honestly liked the first one more humor wise but this is still strong for splat stick and comedy horror. Maybe a little heavy on the horror in jokes?

re: Last boost
The hype for this made me think this was going to be a different movie. Full on big mascot horror fans I know were singing its praises but I genuinely loved the depths this went into in regards to various situations, like how the homeless are treated, police as the least helpful institution, people with power unaware or fully aware of their cruelty and of course reasonable fears when private spaces are shared.
You'll never guess what Bill Skarsgård does!

re: Last boost
I frequently try to guess ahead in any story and reevaluate how it unfolds vs how I guessed. My spouse was amazed with me guessing a major plot point of the Lost series very quickly. With that confession - I kept looking for something that wasn't there in this movie. I kept trying to find a more magical world when they repeatedly admitted the mundanity of most of this lore. That said I did fall asleep and miss the climax. 40 year old Hopkins is so odd

Re: last boost
What a find! I'm hearing this may have been the first soviet horror movie. I wish I could have seen it subtitled instead. I wonder if this was meant to have soviet criticism on religion. The final act was absolutely wild but this is not to dismiss the build up in which a character has to deal with fear from non spiritual dangers as well as supernatural ones. I think the perspective needed is that the protagonist is a selfish jerk, just like anyone else.

Re: Last boost
This was better than it had any right to be. I fear more people need to be terminally online to get the monster's design which, while jarring, evoked for me memories of Jeff the Killer mixed with Pazuzu. I find the concept of
non corporeal entities summoned by unwilling hosts that affect others to be a fun trope. I'm wondering if some of the harsh criticism is from racial and sexist biases. I'm not an ASMR fan but I get that enough people are. SKSKSK

re: Last boost
Some elements of this movie felt disjointed for me. Some visual effects were genuine treats and some broke my focus. It's bit all over. I think some of the folks calling this movie innovative though may need to see or read more because I've encountered both this movie's main plot as well as plenty of other elements and scenes. It still has a lot of amazing presentation. I particularly thought the apartment bed scene was amazingly well done. :( @ copaganda

45. 45. THE 8TH NIGHT (2021)

Korean supernatural horror about hunting a monster's eye that's possessing people and on the run! Featuring an axe-wielding monk with a hardened grumpy x naive sunshine dynamic with the novice following him around.

43. SILENT HOUSE (2011)

Fairly obvious where this one might be going in a locked house with a girl and her dad and his brother and a load of mould creating a toxic wasteland of their dark house, but cw: CSA.

44. PSALM 21 (2009)

Managed to pick 2 CSA plot reveals back to back. fml
This one is Swedish religious trauma (Lutheran) and sex abuse in the Lutheran church.

40. MANDY (2018)

What a film to have watched with my human eyes

I think I liked it but I am just not sure of anything anymore

41. 32 MALASANA STREET (2020)

Spanish haunted apartment set in 1976 - transphobia and "hurt people hurt people" narrative I didn't like

42. THE BANISHING (2020)

British haunted manor with religious and family trauma, during rise of fascism in 1930s. A lot of ghostly monks. Unclear on the theology tbh, but lots of out-of-wedlock shame.

38. A WOUNDED FAWN (2022)

Brain injury is one of the WORST things for me, I wasn't prepared for this to be the premise of the main chunk of the film. Absolutely horrified me, so yep a horror film alright... Liked what the director did I think?

39. VAMPIR (1932)

German early talkie when everyone was still learning how to make films. Based on Le Fanu's Through A Glass Darkly. It's not bad, but I was tired and it didn't hold my attention so I'll rewatch it soon.

36. A DROP OF BLOOD (2015)

Emeriti supernatural horror where an evil stepmother summons jinn to torment her stepdaughter and it all goes hideously wrong. It was ok! End could have been better.

37. HEREDITARY (2018)

Finally saw this movie! I liked it, I have some thoughts, unformed and to do with wealth acquisition and the destruction of the family and dynamics and a lot of stuff...

34. INCANTATION (2022)

Taiwanese film, do not watch if you have trypophobia because the body horror gets that way. Really interesting (to me) concept of a community participating in a curse to dilute it vs some outsider getting it concentrated.

35. ILE OWO (2022)

Nollywood dark fairy tale best described w/o spoilers as READY OR NOT meets THE INVITATION - her mum was my fave character. The ending was ok, I think could have been stronger, but overall really liked it.
