Playing a single arcade game for a monthly challenge is a great way to really understand how that game works. Learning enemy patterns, bonus structure, scoring and your own limits peels back the game's layers - enriching the experience.
This month, that game is Rainbow Islands, a Taito arcade game from 1987 and the sequel to Bubble Bobble. The home conversions were superb and very popular.
Firing rainbows is a unique attack but, like Bubble Bobble's bubbles, your attacks can be jumped on and chained. But they can also be upgraded. A lot.
It's a great game that brings back good memories of playing Amiga games with friends back in the 90s.

Currently playing Spinmaster on the Neo-Geo for the fun of it but also for the #10pscore monthly score challenge.
It's not a game I've played much of but I can definitely see the appeal. Has some Metal Slug vibes, with big sprites and lots of enemies from all sides but the levels mix it up with run n gun sections as well as runaway mine carts and river-based action.
