Dec. 23: Thoughts From Places

Here are a couple places I have been/lived. See alt text for details! 😃💖

I lived in Boise, Idaho for several years before moving back to Missouri, and now to Texas.

I love Portland, Oregon it's my favorite place ever.
Disneyland is insanely cool, but very very expensive.

Traveling gives us a chance to learn about ourselves in a way little else can.

I've travelled to meet my gf's family. She is someone I've clicked so easily with, communicated so well with, and laughed so hard with. Don't worry. This toot isn't about romance. I've not been close with my family since leaving home. Even before that, I often "adopted" my friends' families.
This one doesn't feel like I'm adopting my friend's family. I feel like I fit right in. It doesn't feel pressured. I don't feel intrusive. I don't feel judged.

It feels less like tossing things out into a void then sharing things with friends. And also, I’m not going to lie, I enjoy getting favorites and boosts and seeing who has seen and liked my stuff.

Being on Mastodon, and the #12DaysOfAwesome event in particular, has been the best time I’ve ever had on social media. I’m very grateful for everyone here who has been making this an awesome place to be.

Starting on a new platform was daunting, but it was a fresh start I needed. I felt freer to look up tags of stuff I’m interested to find people to follow and I have loved regularly getting space pictures in my feed. Being in a community of nerdfighters lets me feel more comfortable talking about what video games I’m playing or YouTube videos I’m watching.

Life went on and I grew out of the set of YouTubers I had started using Twitter for. Unfollowing the ones I wasn’t interested in anymore made my timeline sparse and with everything going on with the new owner, when I heard about the nerdfighter instance on Mastodon, I decided to jump ship.

I made a “professional” Twitter account in college where as part of an internship I did, they wanted us to tweet about the stuff we did. With my name and picture attached, I was careful about what I posted and who I followed. I felt like I couldn’t actually tweet about stuff I liked and was interested in because some future employer might see and disapprove. There was no point in tweeting from my personal account since it was private and no one was following me.

I didn’t like the idea of my social media account being used against me in the future when I grew up, so I used a username. (This is also one of the reasons why I didn’t have a Facebook account until this year when I needed it for my job.) I locked that account down as much as I could, and then I forgot about it until midway through high school where only used it to follow YouTubers I watched.

In middle school, I had a computer class and in it, our teacher was telling us about social media and the ramifications of having that data on the internet forever. As part of the class, he had us make Twitter accounts.

I remember going up to him and asking about using a pseudonym versus my real name. He said that if I was ready to put myself out there, then I could use my name, but only if I was sure.

When Christmas approaches, people start looking for Pine trees. They must be the right size, full of green, even distributed... they must be perfect.

It so happened that in a certain year, the tree of the cathedral square in Erfurt (Germany) wasn't perfect. People called it ugly, too short, too skinny.

But imperfection is what makes us human, and thus the legend of Rupfi, the merry ugly Christmas tree was born!
