Today in Labor History February 1, 1865: President Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, abolishing slavery. However, the 13th Amendment does not abolish all forms of slavery. The state is still permitted to force prisoners to work for free, or for wages far below the minimum wage. They are even allowed to do this and sell the products made by prisoners for a profit. And, so long as capitalism exists, wage slavery will still persist.

The roots of #abolition are deep. The policing/incarceration systems are symptoms of the ailment. We need to reimagine a society that functions without the need for the system. Then abolition becomes a practical possibility.

Today in Labor History December 18, 1865: US Secretary of State William Seward proclaimed the adoption of the Thirteenth Amendment, prohibiting slavery throughout the USA. However, the thirteenth amendment included the following clause: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” Jim Crow laws in the past and racial profiling today result in large numbers of African Americans and poor people being incarcerated and subjected to legal slavery. Some were even rented out to plantations that had used chattel slaves in the past. But with the U.S. having both the world’s highest number of incarcerated people (2.1 million) and the highest incarceration rate (665 per 100,000), there are plenty of people from all ethnicities who continue to be subjected to legal slavery.

The fact that it took us this long for our government to recognize the day when all Black people finally knew they had been kinda sorta made free (with a giant asterisk) shows just what this country is.

And since people in the overculture of this country did not see fit to fix that loophole, the oppressive crackdowns and increase totalitarianism in this country is about to wash up on your shores as well. Whatever can happen to someone who lives under the same laws as you will eventually get you as well if you don't fight for the people who have it the worst.

There's not much time but there is still time. Ignore the attempts to placate us with Hallmark holidays and instead fight for genuine freedom for all people. All the time.
