April 24 - the birthday of Nathaniel Hone (1718-1784) - an Irish-born portrait and miniature painter, one of the founder members of the Royal Academy in London. Then, in 1775, he became embroiled in controversy after executing "The Conjurer", a satirical picture seemingly ridiculing the fashion for Italian Renaissance art as well as Sir Joshua Reynolds, President of the Royal Academy.

1774 US Gravestone outside the Waxhaw Church in South Carolina. Engraving. Lettering. Serif. Lower and upper case. Small Caps. Vertical stroke for 7 and 4. End of the R leg has a cute little kick that doesn't quite reach the baseline. Some fun proportions.

Today I was walking my dog with my full #1700s #jacobite gear on and someone in my apartment complex was curious about #historybounding like “I wish I could dress more than just basic, I wish I knew someone that cool lived here”.
I always love those moments because I get to be like “you can!! Just rid yourself of the belief that you have to dress ‘normal’ and the sky’s the limit!!”
Break free of conventional fashion! Be your best self! Be a trend setter!!

In common with most married women in the 1700s, my 6 x great grandmother Ann Axe gave birth approximately every two years - in 1779, 1782, 1784 and 1786 to William, John, James and Mary respectively. I anticipated finding another birth record in 1788, but instead I discovered Ann’s death record. Ann was buried on 15 January 1788. At the age of thirty-one, it’s possible that she died in childbirth.

*Don't Look Back* but this past weekend back in 1729 was the first ever concert in America. Held in Boston, it was *More Than A Feeling.*

Oh wait, one last thing I forgot to mention:
'Gin Craze' makes it sound like people were getting wasted on too much Beefeater.
The thing is, back in the 1700s 'gin' meant pretty much any grain-based spirit, so who knows what people were actually drinking!?
Might have been something like gin, might have been something more like whisky, or it might have been something sort of in between the two...

November 28, 1720: #AnnBonny is sentenced to death for the crime of piracy. She escapes execution when it's revealed she is pregnant.
Bonny and #pirate pal #MaryRead both "pleaded their bellies," an #English common law process for expectant mothers facing the death penalty.
And while Read died in prison, Ann Bonny's fate is unknown:

Gentleman’s Magazine c 1753, once my favourite reading. Tried to make this electrical harpsichord with no success. “We have heard of an ocular harpsichord; this is so in some sort .. for when played on in the dark the eye is agreeably entertained as well as the ear, by the brilliant sparks which flash out like stars at every touch” #classicalmusic #musicalinstruments #harpsichord #history #musicology #musichistory #1700s

Good morning from the #18thcentury 🍑
This satirical print of 1777 takes aim at the reigning fashions for enormous hair - here, an elegant woman is depicted as a huge, coiffed wig atop a bare bottom, with prettily clad feet.
As the Met says, it ‘acknowledges the sexual appeal of the fashion while simultaneously suggesting that those who followed it were literally brainless.’ Charming!
