The #1798Rising informed #MariaEdgeworth 's novels "Castle Rackrent" and "Ennui". This article covers both that, and the (now difficult to believe) contemporary erasure of Protestant involvement in the Rising. (This, despite many of the leaders being Protestant *and* the fierce fighting in Antrim and Down.)

Today marks the 200th year anniversary of the passing of General Jean Joseph Amable Humbert.
A veteran of Napoleon's Grand Army, he fought along the Irish Rebellion of 1798 , before settling in #NewOrleans and taking part in the Battle of Chalmette against the British in 1815.
#HenryCooke died #OTD 1868. Aged only 11 during the #1798Rising, he worked to combat radicalism in education and religion.
As minister in Killyleagh he argued with #ArchibaldHamiltonRowan. He fought the #Belfast Academical Institution, calling it a "seminary of Arianism". He was a key figure in the splitting away of #Unitarianism from the main #Presbyterian church in Ireland.
He shaped the religious landscape in 19th century Ulster.

@FergalLenehan I don't do podcasts. Do they discuss the mass lynchings of thousands of people after the #1798Rising?
Theobald #WolfeTone died in prison #OTD 1798. He had been a founder member of the #UnitedIrishmen in 1791, had personally sought assistance from the French and was aboard a ship at the aborted invasion at Bantry Bay in 1796, and a leader in the #1798Rising.
He was buried in Bodenstown, Co. Kildare.
