In the end I bought some clearance drill kits for $20 each from the Warehouse. I Frankensteined the battery terminals (red) onto the old tools. The tool doesn't care what flavour of electricity you put into it, as long as it gets the right voltage and current. Some soldering of leads, reused screws, LED bulbs, and copius hot glue later, I had ugly, working tools.
Here's the work light. There is also 2 drills, a sabre saw and a skilsaw. The skilsaw sucks.

Years ago I was I given an old set of 18v, trade quality, NiCad tools. The batteries were dead, or near dead. I tried the freezer trick. I considered repacking the cells. I considered replacing the cells with Li-ion, but that would require BMS and improvised chargers.
