Another map from 1912, showing the upper bend of the Niger River. It names itself as the fruit of the Gironcourt Mission, which I pinned down to Georges Regnard de Gironcourt. They're too obscure to turn up much on Google.

Interesting things about this copy of it. There's a note in the upper left naming "Dr. David Randall-MacIver" as the donor to the American Geographical Society in 1913, then a stamp at bottom stating it was later given to the Versailles Conference!

A map of Antarctica and the islands of the southern Antarctic Oceans, from Germany in 1912. It shows Shackleton's expedition to 88° 23' S but seems to pre-date Amundsen's return to Tasmania (and announcement to the world) in March of 1912.

One of my favorite stories from doing family research for a friend. Her Italian-immigrant ancestor murdered a man in Ardmore, Pennsylvania in 1913 because he was dancing. Yep, dancing. He was eventually convicted, spent time in Eastern State Penitentiary, and later settled in Columbia, Pennsylvania. @histodons

Arguably, The Golden Age of Hollywood opened with The Mothering Heart, a 1913 drama starring Lillian Gish ‘The First Lady of American Cinema’ and Walter Miller. The plot centred on a clandestine affair.

The Mothering Heart has more cast members, 26, than running minutes, 23. A print of the film still survives.

I’m outlining a novel set in 1918 and the Hero was proving elusive. So, I asked my youngest son, who has a deep knowledge of WW1, how could a soldier leave the war, alive, before its conclusion? There are several answers, of course, but he said “desertion” and the Hero, and the conclusion of the book, came to life. The working title is The Ninety-Three (the initial idea arrived when I thought, what if you turn everything about The Thirty-Nine Steps around?)

The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan first appeared as a serial in All-Story Weekly, (5 – 12 June 1915) and Blackwood’s Magazine (July – September 1915). The story was published as a novel in October 1915 by William Blackwood and Sons.

@histodons Hey look, I found a rare photo of myself at Oberlin in 2003. I'm the one at the center right who's like, "Yeah, I picked the right school."

Movie Women: A History

Florence Turner, January 6, 1885 – August 28, 1946, made her movie debut in 1907 in How to Cure a Cold. She made the movie for the Vitagraph Studios and, in an era when actors were not identified by name, became known as ‘The Vitagraph Girl’. By 1910, Florence’s name was known to the general public, and by 1915 she’d started her own production company, Turner Films.

A number of women held prominent positions in early Hollywood, as writers, directors, producers and camera operators. This is Margery Ordway in Photoplay, October 1916, during the filming of Her Father's Son.
