The Damned Don’t Cry (1950), a delightfully overheated noir-tinged Joan Crawford melodrama. She becomes a fashion model and naturally winds up as a gangster's moll. A fine movie although Crawford was fifteen years too old for the part.

Island of Doomed Men (1940) is a reasonably enjoyable B-movie about a sadistic diabolical criminal mastermind (Peter Lorre) running a slave island. It's not too bad Lorre's sinister crazed performance is the reason to watch it.

Film noir doesn't get any better than Edgar G. Ulmer’s bleak masterpiece of cinematic deception Detour (1945). Everything is against this poor schmuck. That's his story and he's sticking to it. Watch out for dames with claws.

The Great Flamarion is an early (1945) Anthony Mann film noir. Erich von Stroheim, Dan Duryea and Mary Beth Hughes do a trick-shooting theatrical show but sexual jealousy and guns can be a nasty combination. Fine performances, good movie.

David Lean’s celebrated screen love story Brief Encounter (1945). Two people meet at a railway station and fall in love but they're both already married to other people. In the 1940s an insurmountable obstacle. Still packs an emotional punch.

The main problem with Carol Reed's NIGHT TRAIN TO MUNICH (1940) starring Margaret Lockwood is that you're going to compare it to THE LADY VANISHES with which it has a lot in common. Not as good as Hitchcock's film but a decent train thriller.

The 1948 Orson Welles version of MACBETH. One of the two great screen adaptations of the play, the other of course being Polanski's 1971 version.

The Woman in Green (1945), the 11th Basil Rathbone-Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes movie and a good, rather dark, film. An original story that borrows elements from several Conan Doyle tales. London is terrorised by Jack the Ripper copycat murders.

North West Mounted Police (1940), a 1940 Cecil B. DeMille western. He didn’t make movies the way modern critics and reviewers think movies should be made. Personally I prefer DeMille’s way of making movies. He loved melodrama. I love melodrama.

Raoul Walsh's High Sierra (1941) made stars of both Humphrey Bogart and Ida Lupino and it's an important proto-noir. Bogart and Lupino are both mixed up in a disastrous bank robbery and then they're on the run in the great outdoors.

Lacks the true noir visual style but it's a great movie.
