Chinatown (1974), Polanski's best film, Jack Nicholson's best performance. Easily Faye Dunaway's best performance. Looks great. Terrific production design. Packs a punch. Everything in this film works perfectly. Neo-noir at its best.

Sergio Martino's The Island of the Fishmen (1979). Prison ship survivors are marooned on an island and they're up against monsters, voodoo and mad people. It's a glorious romp done with style and energy and a slight steampunk vibe. Great fun.

Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion (1972), a women-in-prison movie/female revenge movie of awesome intensity. It's also one of the classics of pinky violence. It has style to burn and touches of surrealism. And it has Meiko Kaji ready to explode.

The Italian-Spanish co-production MURDER MANSION (1972). Three people take refuge in a spooky house. There are rumours of vampires and witches. But is this a gothic horror movie or a giallo? It doesn't matter. It's crazy oddball and fun and looks good.

Ken Russell's Savage Messiah (1972), based on a true story, the tale of a sculptor who was perhaps a thwarted genius. Plenty of Ken Russell excess in this film. If you hate his movies you’ll hate this one. If you love his movies you’ll love it. Helen Mirren stars.

Earthquake (1974) has everything that I love in a 70s disaster movie. If I wanted to explain the genre to someone I'd say go see Earthquake. Plus it has Chuck Heston. And it still looks cool. With no CGI!

Just Jaeckin's Madame Claude (1977), both an erotic film and a political thriller about a very high-class call-girl ring, run by a rather sympathetic madam. Combines voyeurism and paranoia. A gorgeous, provocative and intelligent movie.

Special mention should be made of Serge Gainsbourg’s score, and of Jane Birkin’s wonderful vocals.

I love 70s disaster movies but The Hindenburg (1975) doesn't quite come off, despite some interesting ideas. Since it was a real disaster so we know exactly what's going to happen it tries to focus on why it might have happened.

Grease (1978) is a movie I'd never seen. Not at all what I expected. It's kind of crazy, in an interesting way. The 50s and the 70s all mixed up together plus some extra weirdness. Seeing it now it has a bit of a psychotronic vibe. I liked it.
