"Until ALICE, there hadn’t been a single mother on TV in a low income job, fighting for healthcare, fighting for benefits…Those stories came out of awareness of what was going on for working women.” — Linda Lavin
ALICE debuted on CBS tonight in 1976.

Gail Fisher (1935–2000) was born on this day.
She was the first Black actress to win an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress (as Peggy Fair on MANNIX in 1970).
For a while, "Laverne & Shirley" was even more popular than the show it spun off from, "Happy Days." And that success is something that kind of shocked Cindy Williams.

@d4doome I didn’t realise the sequence of TV movies leading to a series. I only remembered it as a series, of which I was a big fan at the time (I think I had an annual). #ManFromAtlantis #PatrickDuffy #70sTV #1970sTV

Man from Atlantis (1977) was the first of four successful TV-movies, to be followed by an unsuccessful series. It's a reasonably interesting story about a water-breathing man from Atlantis stuck in the modern world. Features a fine mad scientist.
My review: https://cult-tv-lounge.blogspot.com/2023/08/man-from-atlantis-tv-movie-1977.html

WESTSIDE MEDICAL: "The Mermaid" - 7/7/1977, ABC
On the rare occasions when trans characters showed up in 20th-century TV dramas, they usually were portrayed as hospital patients.
Today in 1977, this short-lived hospital drama series aired a story about a teenaged women's swimming champion from communist East Germany who hopes to defect to the West. The show's producers turned to the Gay Media Task Force to find them a trans issues consultant to review the script and make suggestions. One of the main changes was the episode title, which changed from "The Freak" to "The Mermaid."
I've read several drafts of the shooting script but have never seen the finished episode. If anyone has a recording of it that they're willing to share, please DM me. #trans #LGBTQ #television #series #MediaStudies #70sTV #1970sTV #ColdWar

Today in 1971, this NBC interview show gave time to Irving Bieber, a prominent psychologist who specialized in demonizing gay and bisexual people.
In the interview, he discussed his theories on the origin and "treatment" of the supposed disease of homosexuality.
