Metal Gear Solid was released 25 years ago on 3rd September 1998.

One of the craziest games ever made and the one that took the series to worldwide fame and success. One of the games that made 1998 probably the greatest year in videogame history.

Rainbow Six was released 25 years ago on 21st August 1998.

When this game came out, it seemed rather weird for a shooter, including tactical squad game elements.
I remember the game not being seen as one of the huge titles of that year but it was getting quite some attention. And ended up the first game in a series that has been going for two decades with eight games.

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines was released 25 years ago on 24th June 1998.

When this game came out, me and my friends were all over it. I played it a lot and totally loved it, though I think I never got much further than the third level.
The game became the start of a very successful series and directly inspired the Desperado games as well.

Unreal was released 25 years ago on 22nd March 1998

When Unreal came out, it was seen by many as one of the most important releases of the year, often regarded as an equal to or even surpassing Half-Life, which came out six month later. However, it soon faded into relative obscurity and was greatly surpassed in fame by its spin-off Unreal Tournament.

It's main legacy remains its game engine which has become the most important software family for 3D graphics.

StarCraft was released 25 years ago on 31st March 1998.

One of the most standout releases in a year that saw the release of numerous great classics. I once read someone claiming that StarCraft killed the RTS boom of the 90s because it had reached a level of perfection that left other developers no more room to improve on it, and damn every future RTS to be "not as good as Starcraft".

I only first played it first 10 years later, but it might be true.

Parasite Eve was released 25 years ago on 29th March 1998.

One of the great PlayStation classics that I have to admit I still have not got around to play.

FreeSpace was released 25 years ago on 19th March 1998.

Back in the late 90s, starfighter combat games were a pretty substantial genre. X-Wing and Wing Commander being the clear leaders, but FreeSpace managed to make a name for itself as well.
FreeSpace 2 came out just one year later with huge improvements to the engine and became widely considered the best game of this type, but also turned out to be the last major release of the genre.
