TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY
THE DAILY SHOW - 6/27/2013, Comedy Central
The previous day, the US Supreme Court had struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and required the federal government to recognize states' same-sex marriages. Now, guest host John Oliver looks at prominent Republicans' anger over the ruling. This is a clip from a longer segment.
Little has changed since then: The Republican party has continued to condemn this ruling (in United States v. Windsor) and to blast a later SCOTUS ruling that also favored marriage equality (in Obergefell v. Hodges). The party's most recent presidential-year platform demanded the appointment of judges who would roll back our basic rights, and some current Supreme Court justices have indicated an eagerness to do so.

THE DAILY SHOW - 6/26/2013, Comedy Central
The US Supreme Court's first marriage equality ruling happened today in 2013.
Here's how John Oliver and Samantha Bee covered it for THE DAILY SHOW, a comedy series that managed to contextualize it with other news of the week (notably the SCOTUS ruling gutting the Voting Rights Act) in ways that some "real" news shows missed.
