Visitors to IMMA, Dublin, may have experienced Ilya and Emilia Kabakov’s installation The Children’s Hospital (which reverberated with the more institutional and medical history of IMMA’s site, the Royal Hospital). Also in the IMMA Collection is a beautiful set of Ilya’s drawings illustrating a series of his narratives. #Kabakov #KabakovRIP #IlyaKabakov #Art #Conceptual #ContemporaryArt #20thCenturyArt #IMMA #RoyalHospitalKilmainham

I didn’t get to post at the weekend following the news that Ilya Kabakov had died, aged 89. The conceptual artist was born in Dnipropetrovsk in what was then the Ukrainian SSR of the Soviet Union. He worked for 30 years in Moscow, from the 1950s until the late ‘80s. After that lived and worked on Long Island, USA. #IlyaKabakov #Kabakov #KabakovRIP #IlyaKabakov #Art #Conceptual #Installation #ContemporaryArt #20thCenturyArt

Film of the day: INGEBORG BACHMANN - REISE IN DER WÜSTE (INGEBORG BACHMANN - JOURNEY INTO THE DESERT, dir Margarethe von Trotta, 2023) Both intriguing and staid, this biopic of the Austrian writer dilutes its sharp observations and attentive performances in a far too conventional construction that sets it squarely in the prestige bourgeois landscape its subject and author often railed against.

Looking at photos of Henry Moore's "King & Queen" statue. A bronze couple is side by side in robes, and their heads look like crustaceans or maybe well-worn teddy bears depending out how you squint. They sit on a very simple inverted "U" bench and in my favorite photo which the sculptor took himself, they look like they're calmly gazing over the whole countryside.

The fascinating artist Tina Bauer-Pezellen was born #onthisday in 1897 in Kotor, Montenegro, then Cattaro, Austro-Hungarian Empire.
She studied in Vienna and later was influencedby the work of the great German artists Paula Modersohn-Becker and Käthe Kollwitz and her work shares their poignant sense of empathy
In the 30s she and her husband moved to Germany, but her work was denounced by the Nazis

Holy Innocents’ Day, an engraving by French artist François Brochet (1925–2001) who made his home in Burgundy. A young mother is protecting her child from Herod’s terror, remembering happier times when she first presented her newborn infant to the world. We remember all children who are cruelly used today.

Yhe great German-Jewish painter Lotte Laserstein was born #onthisday in 1898.
The main focus of her early art was the "new woman" of the 20s, which was enough for the Third Reich to condemn her work, but from 1934 she was officially banned from exhibiting under the new racial laws.
In 1937 she fled to Sweden, where she remained for the rest of her life

But really, when is it *not* a good time for a Mexican woodcut of peasants swinging a giant axe at Fash? (Leopoldo Mendez 1902-1969)
Both are fat horizontal rectangles with pleasing layouts of vivid, vari-sized circles, half-circles, triangles, rectangles, and the occasional wiggly line. Gouache, in both primary and secondary colors. (A few spots of black or white, too.)
("Printemps" at left & "Hiver" at right.)
So... I hear we like trees all of a sudden...?
(1920s Sheet music. Cream colored background w/tree line drawing. Oscar Kasbach adapting the poem by Joyce Kilmer.)
