The conceptual artist was born in Dnipropetrovsk in what was then the Ukrainian SSR of the Soviet Union. He worked for 30 years in Moscow, from the 1950s until the late ‘80s. A bronze couple is side by side in robes, and their heads look like crustaceans or maybe well-worn teddy bears depending out how you squint. They sit on a very simple inverted "U" bench and in my favorite photo which the sculptor took himself, they look like they're calmly gazing over the whole countryside.

She studied in Vienna and later was influencedby the work of the great German artists Paula Modersohn-Becker and Käthe Kollwitz and her work shares their poignant sense of empathy

Yhe great German-Jewish painter Lotte Laserstein was born #onthisday in 1898.
The main focus of her early art was the "new woman" of the 20s, which was enough for the Third Reich to condemn her work, but from 1934 she was officially banned from exhibiting under the new racial laws.
In 1937 she fled to Sweden, where she remained for the rest of her life

Both are fat horizontal rectangles with pleasing layouts of vivid, vari-sized circles, half-circles, triangles, rectangles, and the occasional wiggly line. Gouache, in both primary and secondary colors. (A few spots of black or white, too.)
