Hi. I'm Adam. I've a massive interest in #genealogy and hope find a few answers I've been after for a few years.
There is a story on the Irish side of my family that my Grandad had a child while in the military in Germany, around 1958.
I've a photo of the would be mother and her first name, and know they lived in Berlin.
Ive done DNA on #ancestry #23andme #MyHeritage and uploaded everywhere else I can to no avail.
Would anyone else have any other suggestions? Thanks!

Okay so...wow, weird day. I went from installing Google Reporting API on one of the Debian machines to trying to find a good place to get PGX testing...and discovered a half sister and a first cousin I didn't know existed. WHAT?!!? Thank you #23andMe?

#23andMe results as a random New Brunswicker:
56% British and Irish (strong showing from County Cork and western Ireland, as expected; Manchester and Merseyside come up strong too).
The #Acadian side breaks down as follows:
10.9% French (mostly Occitanie region by the Mediterranean);
Spanish and Portuguese 16.6%
Italian 2.5%
Broadly Southern European 2.2%
"Indigenous American" 1%
And then there's also 15.2% "Broadly Northwestern European."

Vel, jeg hsr tatt en DNA-test fra #23andMe og resultatene har endelig kommet!
Det ser ut som jeg ikke kunne vært mer portugisisk! Hæhæ!

Some #FoodForThought from the #researchpaper linked above💡💡💡
“Importantly, in my view, the term ‘genetically similar to’ also helps to avoid the assumption of homogeneity within labels; ‘similar to’ does not imply ‘same as’. Similarity-based sample descriptors also move us some way to acknowledging the continuous nature of #geneticvariation across #humangroups in our sample descriptions. I am more genetically similar to some samples than I am to others, but that does not imply that there are natural groupings. Nor do similarity-based labels imply how I, as an individual, might choose to identify or what distribution of environments I might experience. For example, a person may be genetically similar to 1000 #Genomes samples labeled Southern Asian, yet in itself this similarity does not identify them as Southern Asian, whereas stating that a person has ‘Southern Asian #geneticancestry ’ comes much closer to making that linkage in people’s minds.
Working out the #genealogicalhistory of individuals and of groups of people from around the world is a fascinating area of research, but it should not be the day job of the majority of researchers in the field of #humangenetics , who instead need accurate sample descriptors of current day #geneticdiversity that aid clear communication.”

Anyone ever used #ancestry .com or #23andme to learn more about their family heritage and DNA? My parents are from Ghana, and I also know that my great-grandfather was Chinese. I’d like to learn more about that because that doesn’t seem typical at all, so fingers crossed.🤞🏾 #mastodon #blackmastodon #race #culture #asia #africa

@ewanbirney would you say that services like #23andme are merely perpetuating this perspective? After all, they have to draw lines somewhere to define what's a 'French' marker, for example. They definitely profit off of that horrible history, and I reckon they could be used to actually combat those same views, what do you think?
