Christmas Eve/Julafton was the Final Day of my #MTGSecretLair #MagicTheGathering #30thAnniversary Countdown Kit-opening.

This year's card was Tamiyo's rat son, Nashi. Guess he's in a pretty bad situation now that his mom has been brainwashed and body-horror'd by the Phyrexians. I feel ya, Nashi.

There's also a foil Lotus Field numbered 2023, but that's a card from 2020. Pretty weird, but also just pretty.

Probably due Covid-induced temporal incongruity, both Shark Typhoon and Elite Spellbinder feel like they're older than from 2020 and 2021 respectively.

Could also be because Wizards of the Coast have been releasing a truly ridiculous amount of product over these past few years.

December 21 has been day 27 of my #MTGSecretLair #MagicTheGathering #30thAnniversary Countdown Kit-opening.

From 2019, the year of the FIRE design philosophy that got us ludicrously powerful cards and a bunch of bans to make up for it, here's a reall creepy-looking Emry: a merperson from Eldraine who deals in enchanted lake swords.

No offense to Brandi Milne, but I think I'll stick to the original printings with art by Livia Prima (who is already one of my very favorite Magic artists).

I had a quick look at my four remaining #MTGSecretLair #MagicTheGathering #30thAnniversary Countdown Kit packs, and I might be imagining things but it seems like the last three of them are pringle-shaped to various degrees.

So at least I'm kinda excited about finding out what foils I have left to open. I'm way past the point where I even remember what cards are supposed to be in these packs.

2018! I can't believe it's been 4 years since this menace of a phoenix. In 2022, Historic players are still dumping their hands and libraries intuitive their graveyards with cheap spells to smack their opponents in the face with these birds.

When WotC betrayed Nissa to kill her budding romance with Chandra. And it seems 2023 will be even worse. 😔

December 19: day 25 of my #MTGSecretLair #MagicTheGathering #30thAnniversary Countdown Kit-opening.

In 2017, we were nearing the end of what I see as the best era of #MagicStory we've ever had. Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh revealed himself at the Hour of Devastation, and utterly dominated our protagonist planeswalkers.

This led to the "party" accidentally splitting up, and the creative team ending their run on the web fiction with the BANGER that was Ixalan's story. (Featuring Jace and Vraska.)

December 18 is day 24 of my #MTGSecretLair #MagicTheGathering #30thAnniversary Countdown Kit-opening.

For 2016, we've skipped right past the 2-set Battle for Zendikar block (my favorite Magic plane, btw, and at the time occupied by Lovecraftian cosmic horrors), and dropped into (Shadows over) Innistrad as its flavors of horror morphs from Gothic to Cosmic.

Thalia is cool, but I can only see myself playing her cards if I finally port my mono-white Taranika Brawl deck to #MTGCommander. I should.

December 17 is day 23 of my #MTGSecretLair #MagicTheGathering #30thAnniversary Countdown Kit-opening!

2015 continued the sweeping changes and experiments that began in 2014. The Tarkir 3-set block, which had a time travel storyline attached to it, was effectively split into two mini-blocks that had the second set (Fate Reforged) in common. The new timeline in Dragons of Tarkir then gave us the regal Dragonlord Ojutai.

Then Magic Origins reintroduced us to those who would become the Gatewatch.

December 16 is day 22 of my #MTGSecretLair #MagicTheGathering #30thAnniversary Countdown Kit-opening.

2014 was the year of my first prerelease event, my first proper draft, Magic's change to the M15 card frame, and also the start of the final 3-set block (Tarkir). And Khans of Tarkir is the set the chonky menace known as the Siege Rhino came from.

I was tired and distracted yesterday, so... December 14 and 15 are days 20 and 21 of my #MTGSecretLair #MagicTheGathering #30thAnniversary Countdown Kit-opening.

We've officially entered "things I was there for" territory. First big Magic purchase was a box each of the Return to Ravnica sets from 2012(/13), where I actually opened a Deathrite Shaman.

In late 2013, Theros had just released with Elspeth, Sun's Champion. I love these "time trouble" planeswalkers as their text boxes are hilarious.

December 13, in addition to being #Lucia / #SaintLucysDay, is day 19 of my #MTGSecretLair #MagicTheGathering #30thAnniversary Countdown Kit-opening.

I'd started a day later and aimed for opening my last card on Christmas Day, rather than Christmas Eve, I would have gotten the visually appropriate Sun Titan for Lucia.

Instead, from 2011, I got this creepy Birthing Pod. Powerful card, and one I've actually played in #MTGCommander in the past. I'll surely pair it with Muldrotha in the future!

December 12 and day 18 of my #MTGSecretLair #MagicTheGathering #30thAnniversary Countdown Kit-opening.

From 2010, I got another fantastic-looking foil in Sun Titan. This Patrick's/particular titan was definitely overdue for some new art, since the other four creatures in the cycle got Secret Lair art back when Kaldheim was released in 2021.

December 11 is day 17 of my #MTGSecretLair #MagicTheGathering #30thAnniversary Countdown Kit-opening.

From 2009, we've got a foil Bloodbraid Elf. This card's done some busted stuff in the past, and the new art is especially beautiful in foil.

Unfortunately, it came out of its pack with an indentation as if someone has pricked it with a nail. Going to report that to Wizards of the Coast, so I can hopefully get a replacement.

Amazing new art for Heritage Druid from 2008. I'm sure I mentioned earlier that I want to build a new and less solitaire-like elf deck, and when I do I'm sure that this specific print is going into it.
