With improving weather conditions we hiked up to SOTA DM/SX-014 Lausche/Luž in #Lusatia right on the border from #Germany to the #CzechRepublic (POTA DA-0049 Zittauer Gebirge Nature Park, DLFF-0747 Lausche) and only had rain for about 20 minutes. Strong RFI on the mountaintop made it difficult to work #2m in #fm, but #70cm were nice.

Heavy rain hit my relatives and me while walking in #Lusatia and taking a break for activating SOTA DM/SX-031 Czorneboh. I made it very short on #2m, #70cm in #fm and #20m in #cw. We walked a total of about 7,3 km. #HamRadio #SummitsOnTheAir #sota #truSDX #qrp

And this is what the box is.
It contained two #NiceRF #SA868 #70cm radio modules of the Open Edition variant.
Now I need to make the programmer and dig up their FOSS firmware by @edgetriggered
One step closer to my own homebrew #M17 digital voice radio.

Took a day off after this weekend‘s work: SOTA DM/SX-025 Valtenberg on HF, VHF and UHF. Haven’t done a VHF/UHF activation for more than 15 years. Ecologically friendly with the #Deutschlandticket. Had some very nice regional contacts in #Saxonia. #SummitsOnTheAir #sota #qrp #cw #20m #40m #truSDX #HamRadio #2m #70cm

Friend designed something very cool. A new type of a raspi SDR hat!
Receive and transmit have already been tested too.

I finally baught an antenna annalyzer at a ham swap meet. After some adapters I was able to test this 70cm slim-jim that I made. It worked great! My first contact on it was ~26 miles away on simplex and 5 watts. I’m making a 220 and 2 meter next. These are great go bag antennas #antennas #mfj #70cm

#introduction This is GeoEng, otherwise known as VA7GZ. I am a #ham and a geological #engineer who now lives in western #Canada (Nanaimo, Vancouver Island). I’ve had a 5-year hiatus from the hobby, mostly due to living in #Australia. Now that we are back, I’m on #2m and #70cm, with minimal attention so far to higher bands, although I have tried them a bit on low power. Despite past experience, I’d say I’m only at the advanced beginner stage, as I have a lot to relearn.

I did a writeup in 2020 after I got my MMDVM hotspot to see much range I could eke out of it.
https://vielmetti.typepad.com/w8emv/2020/07/what-is-the-effective-coverage-of-my-dmr-hotspot.html
My best distance was 137 meters, measured by GPS, from home to the bus stop. That's almost line of sight with just one building in the way using high power (5 watts) on an RD-5R into the hotspot, and Parrot to verify.
Time to repeat this with a different antenna / different radio!
Some testing on #70cm, trying to check-in to #IRLP this morning, and yeah, I can receive pretty well on the j-pole, but transmitting is real spotty. I caved and ordered a proper #NanoVNA so I can be a bit more precise in my antenna experiments. I dislike how expensive it is to DIY VHF stuff, but I figure I'll get enough use out of it long-term.
I need to get my general and/or get decent speed at CW so I can move to the cheaper HF stuff. Slightly cheaper.

This is my alltime DX on 70cm band: Tropo QSO with estonia. I used 2x13 ele yagis and 50 W Out. Long time ago ...
I had no Dx-cluster or other help. Had time to listen and luck. I used to live in a small 2 room appartment in an old house and had a contract to erect antennas ...

So it is recommended to turn your 2 m /70 cm Set on as often as possible and listen for Tropo / ES Condx. Good luck!
