Got this old #7DRL #roguelike called Scrap from 2005 compiled in DOS. You're a robot and go around robbing parts from other robots, like an early version of #Cogmind. Pretty cool.

@Play: Highest-Rated Games of 7DRL 2023, Part One
It's been a while since we had a look at the roguelike space. I've been waiting to make @Play's return a review of some of the games of 7DRL 2023. Scoring is finally done, so we have a solid top-ten, or rather top 11, since there's a three-way tie for 9th place.

"Decker" by illiux: https://illiux.itch.io/decker
A heavily Cogmind-inspired traditional roguelike that has you infiltrating your choice of target systems, upgrading your hardware and buying new programs, running software to overcome passive and active defenses... There's a lot going on--it's pretty deep, and one of my favorites this year! We had the dev with us the entire time as well, providing lots of interesting input.

"Cave Runner" by Pharaoh439: https://pharaoh439.itch.io/caverunner
Steal back stolen loot from goblin caves and escape before they catch you to sell it back to the owners and buy supplies to help you in this mostly non-violent #7drl. Not too hard overall, as long as you don't get too greedy too fast, but there is some interesting strategy in there with funny bits.

#roguelikedev Feedback Friday this week is Leyliner, a 2022 7DRL they've been working on over the past year to see if it can become something bigger: https://old.reddit.com/r/roguelikedev/comments/12e8dpx/feedback_friday_63_leyliner/
Help them test it out!
I reviewed Leyliner last year during #7drl, and it's a neat traditional #roguelike with deckbuilding.

Phew. Big milestone passed on Saturday (big yay!) so I'm hoping I'll have more energy to be creative and productive. I got a taste of that with my #7DRL project "Acolyte's Pledge", which I'm using as the test bed for some personal gamedev framework stuff (as well as driving DOME forward). Hopefully I can keep focused long enough to do things (and maybe post more?)
More progress on my C #playdate #roguelike stemming from my #7drl attempt.
Now have some player movement (with awareness of walls) and basic dungeon generation. All driven by an ECS (pico_ecs).
#7drl streaming batch #2! This one includes Lurk, Leap, Loot; Boat Journey; and Wizard-Thief-Fighter: https://youtu.be/8wNrlCDTGBk
The video from our first #7DRL stream is here: https://youtu.be/BOP2etmUT-w
It starts with an intro to the event, some history, followed by playthroughs of Last Cyan, Fading Signal, Fire-Fighting Wizard Pet Rescue Roguelike, and Turbo Vector. (One of the Last Cyan devs was hanging in chat with more info, too.)
7DRL 2023: Blunt Quaternion
It's a silly NetHack-themed game about exploring a dungeon, presented through a bunch of characters sitting around passing a blunt between them. It's not really that hard, but there is a bit of strategy to it.
You and your pet sit around a campfire with other characters from that dungeon level and talk about things. Your c

Starting this week I'll be streaming fresh playthroughs of #7drl entries, like I do every year, and wow this year is just crazy with how many good ones there are.
First batch (with annual intro) starts in ~11 hours: https://www.twitch.tv/kyzrati/
We'll be playing Life Cyan, Fading Signal, Fire-Fighting Wizard Pet Rescue Roguelike, and Boat Journey--maybe more if we have time.
My main takeaway from the #7drl jam was that I needed to bite the bullet and switch to C.
I wanted to maximize iteration time by not having to launch the simulator every time I wanted to test something. To do that I broke out the engine into a dedicated library (with its own tests) and then hooked it up as an experiment to both an ncuses implementation and then a Playdate game.
It's ended up working really well - I now have a very basic grid-with-movement working on both.
I'm slowly making my way through this year's #7drl submissions, and I'm really enjoying sunil's 'Magpie' a lot. The strategic positioning mechanic makes me come back to it again and again, and I love the fact that this game has no weapons. Well done!
Thinking back on #7drl my biggest misses were not spending enough time on “intro screens” and game description. Next year, I want to start the game jam by writing skeletons for those and picking a consistent theming to make it more of a progression.
I felt good about the gameplay theming but the look and feel of the “wrapper” fell through. Even though that is way less time seen, it’s much more broadly seen. I am just terrible at marketing.
Get ready for today's @slashwareint streaming! we are going to be defying The Devil in a #roguelike machete duel. Playing @slashie_ + @Stoltverd + @QuietGecko + @H2OHervida + @Inkiluannaart's #7DRL "Monte del Diablo" Don't miss it! https://www.twitch.tv/slashwareinteractive 7PM UTC, 12PM PT
