In August 1644, on the way to help her sister in labour with her penultimate child at Middleham Castle, 18-year-old Alice Wandesford (later Thornton) and her horse almost drowned in the river, but 'the poor mare drew up her forefeet & I perceived she did swim' (Book 1). She got to the birth uninjured.
