TOTALLY F***ED UP (1993): First of Gregg Araki’s “Teenage Apocalypse” trilogy, this episodic, at times pseudo-doc style, piece follows lives (and loves) of six gay young adult friends. The themes really reminded me how far we’ve come in some ways, and also how (unfortunately) we are living some “back to the future” moments today too. 90s lo-fi films are usually a fave, this no exception. Creative, compelling, very well done. #90sfilms #queernewwave
THE DOOM GENERATION (1995): First things first, that is a great name for a movie. Rose McGowan leads a threesome (in more ways than one) on a seemingly aimless drive through Cali, lots of murders, $6.66 purchases, and sex along the way. Infused with many little quirky comedic elements, and dripping with eroticism at each turn. That tone makes its disturbing ending all that much more of a shock. Paint me firmly a fan of this. #90sfilms
DREAM LOVER (’93): Some good life advice here, starting with “don’t marry a girl you know nothing about”. James Spader fails to heed that, with of course bad consequences for all. The pot slowly boils - what’s this woman deal, why so many untruths, etc.- until the third act, when things get really crazy (literally). I had forgotten what a stunner Madchen Amick is. Must confess though, I really hated the circus interludes. Whatever the thought was there, it didn’t work. #eroticthrillers #90sfilms

CRIMINAL PASSION (’94): Brutal reviews for this on IMDB, but truthfully, I found it actually kinda good. This one definitely puts the erotic in erotic thriller, and perhaps that helped this along most. Some extremely hot scenes between Joan Severance and John Allen Nelson, with the wee complication of her as a cop and him as her prime murder suspect. Bonus points for Joan’s extremely 90s wardrobe selections. #eroticthrillers #90sfilms
JADE (’95): Ah, those eighteen months after David Caruso quit the hottest show on TV, “NYPD Blue”, to become our next big Hollywood megastar. What a time to be alive. And what a stretch role for him here, as he’s… investigating crimes! At least this time it’s as an assistant DA, checking into that ex-girlfriend/best friend’s wife who may also be an ax murderer. This “erotic thriller” moves briskly and stays entertaining (crazy SF car chase too), even if the wrap-up defies credibility. #90sfilms
BOUND (1996): I hadn’t revisited this one since the days of its first release on VHS, but limited time #CriterionChannel streaming, in their Erotic Thrillers series, provided me prime impetus. WOW. Even better than I had remembered it. Just loved how gorgeously shot, and framed, this was. Sexually charged from that first frame on, and they didn’t skimp on the thriller aspects of this either. Terrific. #90sfilms
CASINO (’95): I often hear the complaint of Scorsese “just making the same gangster movie over and over”. Oh if only that were true. I could watch a hundred of these, always find myself lost in the portraits he paints so vividly. Plus, you layer gambling (another fave movie subject of mine) on top of gangsters- winner. Sharon Stone is great. And just like I felt after watching THE IRISHMAN, I really miss regular visits on the screen from Joe Pesci. #90sfilms
AMATEUR (’94): Very 90s indie vibe from this one. (After all, this has Parker Posey in a small role, which I think was a requirement then…) Isabelle Huppert, a former nun and nyphomaniac and virgin (yes) who writes erotic articles for a living, gets mixed up in a murder plot with an amnesiac and his porn star wife. An appropriately wacky setup, I suppose. The leads are all very good, and it’s entertaining, but sometimes this film also feels like it’s trying too hard. #90sfilms
PARTY GIRL (’95) is the type of movie I’m kicking myself for never having tracked down in its first run, definitely the sort I would have just loved then. Parker Posey is charming chaos in motion, with some of the greatest outfits to boot. This perfectly captures mid-90s NYC vibes and Gen X ennui. And bonus points for making a librarian the cool, desirable gig. Apparently this was also the first film to premiere on the internet? Can only imagine seeing this thru a tiny, laggy window. #90sfilms
