Woah, it's the 5th anniversary of the original #9ReplyGuys twitter thread, posted by @shrewshrew and me back in 2018.
@seachanger I don't know…but you might find it in the fine print of some of the posts over at #9ReplyGuys. Hope that helps!
Looks like the #9ReplyGuys thread blew up on the other side of the world while I was sleeping. I don't have time to look at all of the interactions, but to the guy who asked who appointed me etiquette chief, the answer is your mom
The only good thing about Musk planning to eliminate the block feature (other than hastening the end of x) is that I’ll be able to re-read the amazing replies to the original 2018 #9ReplyGuys thread from fragile MRA’s who ended up blocking us for clowning on them too hard
@liztai at least to the question, “what makes a reply guy a reply guy”, I always cite this epic thread called #9ReplyGuys giving us a taxonomy of reply guys (in STEM specifically but the pattern is of course general): https://zirk.us/@sbarolo/109384456791661494 epic 🔥
@ramin_hal9001 it’s alas very common for admins/community to give people the benefit of the doubt, repeatedly, after they repeatedly say hurtful hateful things to people of color. If you really examine why this happens—why we give so much leeway to those “punching down” while in the process failing to consider the concomitant harm caused to marginalized users—I personally think you will realize that the answer is simply racism.
I don’t think there’s any benefit in sugarcoating it. A lot of people with privilege like me will implicitly choose to believe that someone in our circle deserves education while the ones they’re harming need to just bear it while the educating gets done.
Seen this way, this is a pretty crappy way to do things, right? Having seen this dynamic in real life and online and now on Fediverse, I am personally I support a zero-tolerance approach: the server rules should contain links to anti-racist and anti-reply-guy educational material that you are expected to educate yourself on.
Some further reading: I liked what @ljwrites wrote here a lot because it applies to real life as well: https://rage.love/@ljwrites/109544276232450978

And of course the #9ReplyGuys thread from 2018 alas remains a crucial map for understanding the ways that people can harm others, the sea lions (number six) are legion 😢 https://zirk.us/@sbarolo/109384456791661494
Umm I hope it’s not condescending to suggest this but Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail is like a thunderbolt, a heartfelt meditation and accusation on this topic from a man who had every right to expect others to help his cause, who was unsurprised when help didn’t materialize, and who sought to do the work anyway. On the odd chance you haven’t read the letter and it’s historical background, you absolutely must.
In case you think this is unfair, this is one of a series of loooong replies to @sbarolo #9ReplyGuys thread. I do always appreciate the practitioners providing free demonstrations
I'm old enough to remember when 240 characters wasn't enough for nuance. Inflation hitting everywhere
I don't think I've said anything as bad as what is listed in the #9replyguys thread.
But I do worry that the wording of my posts imply that I might be.
That people will avoid engaging with me, just in case I am.
I dunno... Maybe I'm overthinking this.
I dunno, maybe I don't fit into one of the #9replyguys categories but can just be a bit intense for people, at times. 🤔
Grateful for all of you who found me because of #9ReplyGuys
I wish getting mad at men on the internet paid more. Or at all. It's one of my core competencies, but one I can't indulge too often because I'm busy getting mad at men in real life
so it may be worth mentioning that ALL of the toxic reactions described in the #9ReplyGuys thread above are used by white people (including WW) against people of color all the time, especially against Black people who talk about racism. None of it is exclusive to gender harassment/discrimination.
Mastodon can be a safe place for everybody, or it can be a comfortable place for white people, but while #racism exists it can’t be both.
it might possibly say something about Mastodon that in the entire #9ReplyGuys thread above (concerning misogyny) there was not a single negative reply, but as soon as obnoxious behavior from white people is mentioned, suddenly feelings got hurt
The idea behind #9ReplyGuys is that, if you wish, you can use the 9 images in the thread above to quickly categorize & dismiss sexist replies. Misogynists *hate* being called unoriginal.
Thanks from me and @shrewshrew for your support, suggestions, boosts and encouragement 💕
