🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 On my way to #ACL ! if you wanna chat, hit up my DMs or swing by the Cohere booth on Monday! Looking forward to catching up with old NLP friends and making new ones 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
First time cycling again after the #ACL surgery. Things look very promising. I hope to be back up at 80-100k in a couple of weeks.
Checkup at the hospital for my #ACL and the doctor was: “What kind of work do you do? Your note taking is ridiculous.”
Our #ACL paper about the presence of #BigTech in #NLP is available on #HAL : https://inria.hal.science/hal-04105994
The papers from the RESOURCEFUL-2023 workshop on the role of resources in #NLP at @NoDaLiDa can be found at https://resourceful-workshop.github.io/resourceful-2023/ and will soon appear in the #acl anthology. Thanks again to all presenters, panelists and local organisers for a great intellectual debate.
Back at the Charité for an #ACL checkup. They print out _another_ Datenschutz (“Datenschutz!”) form that I get to sign. I guess I already did one on my last visit? But we can do one every time.
There are also lots of pieces of paper flying around some of which I should have provided (_Überweisung_), but I didn’t because nobody told me to and that’s also fine.
All of this is entirely broken and will only be fixed by spending billions and billions of euros.
Sad to learn that #YorickWilks has passed away - I did not know him well, but I encountered him off and on over the years, and it's fair to say he had a pretty significant influence on my #NLProc thinking, especially my on and off and on again interest in building and using dictionaries. He also had a sincere appreciation for our history, which I think is quite important and sometimes overlooked. His #ACL Lifetime Achievement Award remarks are a nice example of this : https://aclanthology.org/J08-4001.pdf
I can mostly walk without crutches now. It feels weird but I’m guessing I’ll get used to this very quickly. #ACL
I have some bruising at the site of my heparine injections and looked up whether I’m doing it right. #ACL
In Dutch half a dozen hospitals have professional videos on YouTube that explain exactly how to inject yourself.
Example: https://youtu.be/hzvS8Qug9PM
In German… one dude who’s made a video but no institution to be found.
I guess online is still new here? Or they don’t dare use something like YouTube because of #Datenschutz?
I realized that I don’t have any visual record of me ever doing bouldering. And now that I’m retiring it’s like it never even happened. #ACL
Maybe that secretive aspect is the mark of a real hobby? No self-recorded sends to post to TikTok for clout or recognition. Doing something purely for your own enjoyment of doing it.
An unexpected side effect of walking on crutches is that almost every dog I meet gets super aggressive. #ACL
Mildly miraculous thing that happened at my checkup: My doctor had scanned my rehab protocol on my first visit and during this visit to check something he managed to pull it up in under five seconds.
To me this indicates that it’s perfectly possible to have a digital patient file #ePA and the immense benefits of doing so.
Just the lugging around I had to do with MRI login details and scan files could all have been prevented. #ACL
The knee in the picture has two openings that were closed with a suture each and are now fading very much into the background.
One gash down near the shin is a bit longer but less pronounced and closed with bandaid strips. Up on the leg there’s a dot where I was punctured with a big needle. #ACL
The scarring on my knee is significantly less (picture in the next toot) than what I see on /r/ACL with my American counterparts. They consider my doctor to be a god.
What kind of care are people in America actually getting for all that money? #ACL

Just had my first shower since the procedure while sitting in the bathtub. #ACL
Unexpected but not very surprising to find a lot of dead skin cells under the foot that isn’t touching the ground much anymore.
Emptied, filled and ran the dishwasher on crutches. Fired up the electro stimulator for the first time. From today I can put 15kg of weight on the leg which should open up a lot of options. #ACL
