ended, and 35 people have spoken: shy of 2/3 of you bet will happen before we see !

Incidentally this paper happened:

Ari Allyn-Feuer and Ted Sanders. 2023. Transformative AGI by 2043 is <1% likely. arxiv.org/abs/2306.02519

If 20 years give us 0.4% odds, linear extrapolation gives us just 5000 years before we see AGI? Will we see aliens before that time?

@AdeptVeritatis @hobs @kellogh Just spotted this: someone is courageous enough to put a number on when (Artificial General Intelligence) can happen [1]. :-)

Conclusion: 0.4% chance before 2043.

Now listening to: Bizarre and Dangerous Utopian Ideology Has Quietly Taken Hold of Tech World

“It’s really important for people to understand what this bundle of ideologies is, because it’s become so hugely influential, and is shaping our world right now, and will continue to shape it for the foreseeable future,” says philosopher and historian Émile P. Torres. In this episode of “Movement Memos,” host Kelly Hayes and Torres discuss what activists should know about longtermism and TESCREAL." @MsKellyMHayes speaking with @xriskology

"Ultimately, the paradigm of AI “risk management” for AI (whether deployed in Europe, or elsewhere) cannot escape messy, value-laden judgments about matters of civic import. Principled processes and legitimate institutions will be needed to support those judgments."

Thinking of writing a science-fiction story in which an Artifical General Intelligence is created in order to solve the climate crisis, but the only thing it tells them it that they should have stopped burning fossil fuels 20 years ago instead of creating and promptly self-destructs.

"In a utopia where there’s a machine that converts toxic waste into food, generating toxic waste wouldn’t be a problem, but, in the here and now, no one could claim that generating toxic waste is harmless. Accelerationists might argue that generating more toxic waste will motivate the invention of a waste-to-food converter, but how convincing is that?"

“There are real risks with this technology. There are reasons to fear this technology, and who uses it, and how. So, to spend all of our time debating whether our species is going to go extinct because of a takeover by a superintelligent is an absurd use of our time and the public’s mindspace.” on.ft.com/3NxgqPf

"What the author wants the reader to believe is usually straightforward. It’s what they’re trying to argue in what you’re reading. But, what the author wants to believe themselves is often the more important one in an age of misinformation."

This transparency is one of the reasons I trust @baldur's takes on AI more than others. Pundits and grifters don't ever want you to see the game they're playing because it would destroy their "credibility."

I like what @morungos does here, applying Beck's analysis of to the apocalyptic pronouncements about . Today's is so thoroughly about risk -- both in the predictions we make WITH it and the predictions we make ABOUT it.

Any folks aware of other writing on the LLMs/ that shares this orientation?

Last was an absolute tour de force by @timnitGebru on and the promise of utopia through at . This talk came out three months ago, but watched in the context of the most recent "open letter" absolutely eviscerates the premise of it by placing the focus on "AGI" in its historical context. Gebru methodically lays out the line from early 20th century eugenics to the current forces pushing the twin AI doom & utopia scenarios. Highly recommend youtube.com/watch?v=P7XT4TWLzJ (8/8)
