More than 130 federal judges have #violated #US_law and #judicial_ethics by overseeing court cases involving companies in which they or their #family_owned_stock.

About #two_thirds of federal #district judges #disclosed_holdings of individual #stocks, and nearly one of every five who did heard at least one case involving those stocks.

Alerted to the violations by the Journal, 56 of the judges have directed court clerks to notify parties in 329 lawsuits that they should have recused themselves. That #means new judges might be #assigned, potentially #upending_rulings.

When judges participated in such cases, about two-thirds of their rulings on motions that were #contested came down #in_favor of their or their #family’s #financial_interests.

#Exxon_Mobil_Corp and #TIG_Insurance_Co: In New York, #Judge_Edgardo_Ramos handled a suit between an #Exxon_Mobil_Corp and #TIG_Insurance Co. over a pollution claim while owning between $15,001 and $50,000 of Exxon stock, according to his financial disclosure form. He accepted an arbitration panel’s opinion that TIG should pay Exxon $25 million and added $8 million of interest to the tab.

#Comcast_Corp: In Colorado, #Judge_Lewis_Babcock oversaw a case involving a #Comcast_Corp. subsidiary, ruling in its #favor, while he or his family #held between $15,001 and $50,000 of Comcast #stock.

* #Ford_Motor_Co: At an #Ohio_based #appeals_court, #Judge_Julia_Smith_Gibbons wrote an opinion that #favored #Ford_Motor_Co.in a trademark dispute while her husband held stock in the auto maker. After she and the others on the three-judge appellate panel heard arguments but before they ruled, her husband’s financial adviser #bought two chunks of #Ford_stock, each valued at up to $15,000, for his retirement account, according to her disclosure form.

Air pollution is likely to have been #responsible for up to 6 #million #premature_births and 3 million #underweight_babies worldwide every year, research shows.

By #minimising air pollution in south-east #Asia and sub-Saharan #Africa, the study #calculated that the number of premature births and babies with low birth weight COULD be #REDUCED by #almost 78% globally. The analysis, which combines the results of multiple scientific studies, is the first to calculate the total global burden of outdoor and indoor air pollution combined.

Air pollution is usually measured according to exposure to particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns: once inhaled, the minuscule size of these particles allows them to be absorbed deep into the bloodstream, potentially causing far-reaching health problems.

More than 92% of the global population lives in areas where the outdoor air quality is below recommended limits set by the World Health Organization, and about 49% are exposed to equally high levels of indoor air pollution.

Regions such as south and east Asia are the most polluted, with #Bangladesh, #China, #India and #Pakistan home to 49 of the 50 of the most #polluted_cities worldwide. In recent years #wildfires, #agricultural fires and #dust_storms have also caused #extensive air pollution.

The cost of air pollution to the global economy is estimated at #more_than $2.9tn each year, in addition to #serious_damage to #public_health.

For this study, Ghosh’s team examined 108 research papers on indoor and outdoor pollution in correlation with four main pregnancy risks – gestational age at birth, reduction in birthweight, low birth weight, and premature birth – for 204 countries.

After controlling for risk factors such as pregnancy weight, smoking and alcohol use and nutrition, the researchers found air pollution was a leading cause of low birth weight and premature birth. The latter is a main cause of the 15 million newborn deaths worldwide each year.

The findings build on previous research by Ghosh and colleagues, which calculated that air pollution contributed to the deaths of 500,000 newborns globally in 2019.

Air pollution is likely to have been #responsible for up to 6 #million #premature_births and 3 million #underweight_babies worldwide every year, research shows.

By #minimising air pollution in south-east #Asia and sub-Saharan #Africa, the study #calculated that the number of premature births and babies with low birth weight COULD be #REDUCED by #almost 78% globally. The analysis, which combines the results of multiple scientific studies, is the first to calculate the total global burden of outdoor and indoor air pollution combined.

Air pollution is usually measured according to exposure to particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns: once inhaled, the minuscule size of these particles allows them to be absorbed deep into the bloodstream, potentially causing far-reaching health problems.

More than 92% of the global population lives in areas where the outdoor air quality is below recommended limits set by the World Health Organization, and about 49% are exposed to equally high levels of indoor air pollution.

Regions such as south and east Asia are the most polluted, with #Bangladesh, #China, #India and #Pakistan home to 49 of the 50 of the most #polluted_cities worldwide. In recent years #wildfires, #agricultural fires and #dust_storms have also caused #extensive air pollution.

The cost of air pollution to the global economy is estimated at #more_than $2.9tn each year, in addition to #serious_damage to #public_health.

For this study, Ghosh’s team examined 108 research papers on indoor and outdoor pollution in correlation with four main pregnancy risks – gestational age at birth, reduction in birthweight, low birth weight, and premature birth – for 204 countries.

After controlling for risk factors such as pregnancy weight, smoking and alcohol use and nutrition, the researchers found air pollution was a leading cause of low birth weight and premature birth. The latter is a main cause of the 15 million newborn deaths worldwide each year.

The findings build on previous research by Ghosh and colleagues, which calculated that air pollution contributed to the deaths of 500,000 newborns globally in 2019.
