#AIS receiver is currently tracking ship riding around my house! Looks like this is working, now I need better antenna!

So next update on my #RaspberryPi boat system. I've used #RaspberryPico to read NMEA0183 stream from #dAISy HAT and send it into CM4 running #SignalK. What is #AIS? It's automatic identification system and every bigger ship is using radio to send out it's status, WGS84 location and that little red board is able to intercept transmission and spit out #NMEA0183 sentences via UART these are parsed and ship is displayed on map. Data are sufficient to detect collision courses and avoid them.

A good paper on fishing vessels that “go dark” by turning off AIS transponder signals, etc. While legitimate reasons to go dark AISwise, also do to mask illegal or illicit activities. Last summer, as we sailed towards the Mackinac Bridge connecting the Michigan peninsulas, we saw four aids to navigation (ATONs) on our chart plotter. However, as we approached the buoys, they were nowhere in sight. They were Virtual AIS ATONs, broadcast by AIS and magically appearing on our screen.
