Some new research results on #plants and artificial light at night in two common urban species: "Night-time light pollution caused photoinhibition and oxidative stress in plants, and the extent of the deleterious effects varied with the spectral distribution of artificial light sources and species."

Artificial light at night is now so normalized that we rarely think of it as pollution. But for wild creatures, from microbes to mammals, pollutant it is. Our sensory bias as diurnal creatures meant the ecological importance of darkness, increasingly usurped by #ALAN was long overlooked as an important field of study. Now, a vigorous field of research is making up for lost time, seeking solutions that minimize ecological harms.

@JohnBarentine Nice to see that clouds studies (and LP) go ahead. I still remember the words Of @skyglowberlin when I presented in #alan 2016 my PhD results about the importance and pioneering of that kind of studies. Later I contributed a bit to nice Andy papers on that topic. Night sky is not only important in clear moments. Go ahead to the limits of clouds darkening!
"[Artificial light at night] was associated with multiple mental disorders in the middle-aged and older adults, and the findings indicated stricter standards of #ALAN is needed and targeted preventive measures are warranted, especially with high brain iron deposition."
(Usual ALAN-remote sensing warning, though: "ALAN was drawn from satellite datasets", not from measured exposures.)

#Insects trapped by a #streetlight. A 5 second footage.
Now imagine all the street lamps that are also turned on. Imagine all the light sources that are turned on, dusk to dawn. Not for 5 seconds. All-night.
How can this be so underrated?
This is a clear example of a major #impact caused by a "convenience", not a necessity.

"Our study shows that in the absence of direct light pollution, anthropogenic changes in sky brightness relieve nightjars from visual constraints on being active. Individuals adapt daily activities to artificial night-sky brightness, allowing them more time to fly than conspecifics living under natural light cycles. This modification of the nocturnal timescape likely affects behavioural processes of most crepuscular and nocturnal species."
