The very last thing I did at #ARDC was to redesign the website. Check it out at https://www.ardc.net. #hamradio
I really like @mastodon.radio
This is a great server with lovely people and wonderful content.
Thank you to everyone here that's made it not just possible to exist in #hamradio but genuinely thrive.
This wasn't looking likely after ugly and inexplicable behavior towards me personally and the work I do as a volunteer from #ARDC and #AMSAT over the past 2 years.
AMSAT-NA in particular - the other AMSATs have been fantastic to work with.

I’m in the Southwestern Division of #ARRL, and my Director told me “Amateur radio really isn’t a technical hobby any more and I don’t know why you are wasting your time.” That’s a quote.
I’ve been really sad about this communication for a while. This happened about a 18 months ago, when I asked this man for help with targeted harassment and unethical behavior from #ARDC.
He cares a lot about DXing and Contesting.
What can we #hamradio people do about this?
Sudden influxes of money, whether in literature, politics, or tech, have a lot of negative repercussions. It is entirely unclear what the #ARDC philanthropic mission is, and it is clear that #ARRL has adopted the clumsy Bay Area Venture Capital model that the elderly white men at ARDC desperately want to access.
The secret selling-off of *community* assets (25% of the 44 IP block) to *privately controlled* cash could actually have been good for modernizing #hamradio
But, it hasn't been.
I've been a member of San Bernardino Microwave Society #SBMS for many years.
I just wrapped up a couple of years serving as Recording Secretay. I took minutes. I included a summary of all member roundtable reports. I helped with multiple #ARRL #club #grant applications and was involved with the #ARDC Cactus Network grant applications.
I have some opinions, shared by the rest of the board, about how a sudden influx of money has affected one of the best technical #hamradio clubs in the USA.

Thanks to the #FAIRWorkflowsProject an exciting meet-up between DataCite, #ARDC & @SURF took place in Utrecht yesterday, to compare project timelines for a coordinated #PID approach across orgs.
Happy to meet colleagues old + new & a great way to warm up for the #RDAPlenary

The 2022 ARDC Annual Report includes details on the grants we approved last year, a report on the 44Net Assessment, a financial summary, and a look ahead at 2023. https://www.ardc.net/2022-ardc-annual-report-now-available/ #ARDC #hamradio
This is a troubling report. Is there any update since it was published in August 2022? #ORI #ARDC

In playing around in the radio world, i made a few antennas yesterday. Most were 2 meter (146 MHz centered), including a copper cactus j-pole, a ladder wire j-pole, a quarter wave ground plane, and a bnc block dipole. I also made one 70cm dipole. Now, just to tune them... #arrl #hamradio #ardc #antenna #antennadesign #maker #makingma

Great to see the #pid #costbenefitanalysis #Webinar from #ARDC and #MoreBrains show the benefits of #P Persistent Identifiers in terms of both #costsavings and #efficiency

@ARDC the kindest thing that can be said about the people that chose to do this, and choose to this day to stomp on and target amateur radio groups that 1) don't want #ARDC to take shortcuts or 2) bully hams that are "in their way", is that they simply, and totally, failed the "One Ring Test".
This is a reference to Lord of the Rings, where wealth/power corrupts pretty much everyone along the journey, and totally burns out the one person that was able to shoulder the pain.
Please, clean it up.
@ARDC I'd like to point out that while #ARDC puts itself forward as a private foundation, all of their money came from converting a *community asset* - one quarter of the 44 IPv4 block - to cash, by selling it to amazon.com.
They did this without any notice or discussion in the amateur radio community.
These are the same few people that then took charge of doling out the money.
They do not like being questioned or held to ordinary philanthropic standards.
This is a big problem.
@ARDC I've written about ORI's bad experiences with #ARDC here:
http://w5nyv.blogspot.com/2022/08/update-on-troubling-situation.html?m=1
We aren't alone, but others have simply left ham radio instead of speaking up about significant governance and harassment problems from a few ARDC officers.
Please, clean things up.
The #ARDC has finally released the #Trove Researcher Consultation Report, commissioned earlier this year to inform development of the Trove part of the HASS RDC. https://ardc.edu.au/resource/trove-researcher-consultation-report/ It provides some interesting perspectives on current & future research use of Trove. (Full disclosure: I was on the panel that helped with the report.)
Currently just on GitHub, I used it as an example for our recent Visible #ResearchSoftware presentation at #UQ, following #ARDC’s recommendations regarding version control, on a public repository, clear community guidelines, attention to licensing, and inclusion in a community registry with clear metadata.
It overlaps the wonderful osmar package in its role, but osmar hasn’t been updated since 2013, doesn’t use the more recent sf class, and seems to violate the OSM API guidelines.
Thoughts?
Paul Andrea Martinez from #ARDC presenting on “Research Software Visible, Citable and Sustained”.
Great to have Paula lead the discussion around #researchSoftware sustainability and recognition.
