I, just, #hate, #proprietary, #software!

I have been struggling with #Ardop and #pat for a month now. Tried numerous tricks to get it working and at best I got only handshake done and bunch of failed packets even when signal quality is 59. Now with all my hate I tried #vara and this thing simply nailed it! It has been 10 years since I started email over #hf fun and how come we ended up in a worst place? I would gladly pay for vara but no native gnu/linux support.😡

Another semi successful #hamradio #fieldday. I meant to try my new 10.8m #randomwireantenna and #ARDOP #pat but apparently living in a mega city with buildings and #rf pollution makes things hard. Barely connected OE5XIR and HB9AK with 10 watts on 20 and 30 meter. 4 out of 5 packets fail to decode and connection drops. Good side my linked dipole and random wire rocks 😎 lets get a little higher ground and try again...

Well that was fun, I just checked into #FediFridayWinlinkNet using HF #ARDOP to W7INL-10 (the Idaho National Labs ARC!)

It does feel a whole lot like sitting at my parent's office computer trying to get AOL to connect during the busy hours.

ARDOP doesn't seem to want to set the frequency on my radio, and then it took a few tries on a few stations before I finally posted my message. Since it took ~30 minutes to send a two line email, I'll be going back to VHF for next week!

Made an out of the ordinary #hamradio contact today, I heard a ham calling "cq contest" on an old ambient album I have kicking around, so I went to QRZ and (being consistently ham) used #ardop #hf #winlink to send him an email. He was surprised, but happily so!

@colincogle we welcome telnet check ins if HF and VHF/UHF paths are not available, so thanks for the check in, I certainly appreciate it. I had problems with getting #ARDOP to work with my #Ftdx10 , so telnet was the way to go (and once I used the iphone client when I forgot at the last minute.) I’m now using #varaHF as it tolerates my radio, fwiw. Thanks again for the check in.

Good #Winlink reception on 30m, using #ARDOP. Kudos to OE3XEC, 980km away, for keeping up the gateway.
My TX power was no greater than 4W into the car roof-top, magnetic mounted antenna. A real mobile station, packed in a camera bag, easy to deploy.

Well, #Winlink with #VARA at a staggering 175bps on 20m. It works, quite reliably, even with a low end mobile setup (rooftop magmout antenna, 4W uSDX, old #EeePC with obsolete OS). Still no luck with #ARDOP yet.

@rhaen I was under the impression that you had #Ardop running in Wine on your Mac based on your screenshots. Doesn’t Ardop work in wine? #VaraHF seems impossible to get running on a ARM based Mac, at least I had no succes. I also ran into the limited rig support issue of #Winlink. The Pat/Ardop setup is still on my todo list to try.

Update on my #Winlink activity: I got #Ardop working. My issue was finding a node that I could connect to, not anything missing in the Ardop protocol. #openProtocols #hamRadio #WinlinkWednesday

So I grabbed a trial of #Crossover (python magic et al) to do all the complicated parts of installing #RmsExpress (for Windows) into a #LinuxMac.

That works fine, on its own. Can do a telnet connection, and get mail.

It's built-in #ARDOP does not work, but only because it can't do the radio control bit, because... I dunno, something with "com1" or "com2" not being real things.

The IDEAL thing would be for this to be able to just use some Linux-based soundcard modem.

Today was mostly *looks at graph* ARDOP. Due to the RTTY contest desense it shifted to 200hz mode which is reaallly slooooow, but worked without stepping on anyone.

Each spike in each mode was transferring the same data more or less. VARA blew it by miles, +/-560 of them (900km) 😎

Trying to set up Pat #Winlink on #macos. So far, no luck running #ARDOP and getting #rigctl to see my radio. I am tempted to give up and try again on the Pi tomorrow

It’ll be easy for KAM-tone TNCs as well using 28.140MHz LSB, AX25/FX25 inverts to USB for the other modes so dial freq for the multimode stations is 28.1371 USB @ tone pair 1000hz center frequency. See link for chart, much easier.
