Another powerful play - I saw #AStrangeLoop today.

I am still reeling from the stellar performances and the brutal yet poignant themes explored in the play. There's A LOT to process, but Tyler Perry's work gets wholeheartedly trashed!

I was in London yesterday, to see A Strange Loop, and watching that powerful reflection on the impact of religious-based homophobia (especially on the same day as London’s Pride festival!) reinforced the importance to me of ensuring Religious Education in UK schools doesn’t reproduce religious bigotry, and that it actively challenges harmful religious narratives of exclusion that can make our LGBTQ+ students feel victimised and attacked in the supposedly safe-space of the classroom rather than amplify them. I speak about some of the ways I’ve tried to challenge religious homo/trans/bi phobia in my own RE teaching in my book, Anarchist Atheist Punk Rock Teacher ( https://www.earthislandbooks.com/product-page/anarchist-atheist-punk-rock-teacher-by-dan-mckee ) and recommend it as reading for any current RE/RS teacher.

@smaran I got a job in NYC but have had some health issues and couldn't move my first year. Probably won't be able to move for another year while I rehab. I've been a musical theater nerd since 3rd grade. It was my escape from the abuse being visibly disabled in public schools. I will miss #AStrangeLoop before it closes, but so wanted to see it.

Just came across the first Broadway curtain call for "A Strange Loop" and somehow I'm now sobbing with joy, mixed with sadness that I've got to be satisfied with the original Broadway cast recording because there's no chance I'll be in the US during its run. 🥺

Finally, FINALLY going to see #AStrangeLoop on #Broadway next month. A musical about a Black queer man writing a musical about a Black queer man writing a musical. So, #Inception but make it gay, fabulous, and New York?

I only started going to plays and musicals halfway through the PhD, and then the pandemic hit. I haven’t made it out to as many shows as I would’ve liked to since things started going back to normal. But it’s honestly one of the genuine blessings of living in this place.
