Question for the fandoms of the #Avatar Universe (#ATLA and #LOK).

Is the Avatar's world a capitalist world?

I'm on the fence about it. Yes, in Legend of Korra there is companies that seem to be about profits. Yet at the same time, the world itself has a lot of different styles of economy, so it doesn't really fit that it's only capitalist. It looks more like the creators attempted to "modernize" by adapting some capitalist ideas, but then they show other systems existing alongside this (bartering, cooperatives that seem to exist in certain towns). So I feel like the creators got lazy here. (Or maybe they failed to have the imagination to see how technology could exist in non-capitalist modes?)

I'm going to interpret the series as tension between those seeking more capitalist modes of production and those who are against that. And that being the backdrop for some of the issues that cause the rise of "banditry," fascism (Kuvira's plotline), Zaheer (his shitty take on anarchism that neglects community building entirely), and Equalists (their goals weren't necessarily economy based but their actions impacted it regardless).

Can you tell I really love that universe? lol
