What are people's opinions about putting together reading lists for advancement to candidacy/qualifying exams that include/exclude scholarship where the scholar has been called out for bullying sorts of abuse? I understand not citing/citing other work instead, but part of me wonders if leaving the readings off the list is doing a disservice to a student trying to learn the conversations.

I'm reading a paper and wondering at what point do you stop highlighting and write YES above the title?

Like, if the highlighted:not highlighted ratio is over 75%? 85%?

I don’t think I ever used the “intervention” language much—always seemed like a weird fit for how I think about my work—but have fully banished it and started asking students to think about “what conversation they’re entering into” and to think about how they’re scaffolding/building off of existing work. (And never “filling gaps” let alone “firsting”.)

How can you tell when an exam invigilator is bored?

They straighten the empty chairs, very, very quietly.

How is invigilation going at yours?

Grades are filed. It was a good semester, but I need a few days of break before I move on to spring prep work.

@vitak too often, the discussion sections are small, mostly because students are rushing to write them right before a deadline. A good tip is that any big point built up in the intro should be addressed in the discussion section. Look to make the section comparable in length… not exact, but not too short

Deeply conflicted about an upcoming conference that does not require vaccination or masking. It is unsafe for anyone with high risk of covid complications to attend. It is blatant discrimination against disabled scholars.

What kind of reviewer does this? Nobody deserves to be belittled like this, especially when the one doing the belittling is protected by the veil of anonymity. Perhaps reviewers shouldn’t be anonymous, so they can remain academics, not turn into internet trolls. twitter.com/andino_mc/status/1
