It's just amazing how much you can achieve when no one is sick. We had three weeks without illness and I think I finished more projects than in the half year before. Dear future me, please remember this and be kind to yourself during the winter months.

Btw, in academia we often take seminar speakers out for dinner, even though that’s not super family friendly. So here is the mom version: second breakfast, directly after Kita drop-off with ☕️ and 🥐
So happy to finally meet in person after a looong time of collaborating via zoom! 🥳

Just heard that today is National Café au Lait Day in the US.
After drinking no coffee until I was 24, I engaged during my master thesis and now, with two kids and a working group to lead, a cup of Café au Lait is just the thing to keep me going 🥳☕️

Working parents rule no. 1: don't schedule important appointments when your spouse already has an important appointment at the same time, because _inevitably_ either one kid will become ill or daycare is closed.
At least for the kid without childcare, the grandparents were able to cover for us. I was able to switch my urgent meeting to Zoom, so the sick kid could stay on the couch with me. Flexible working is really something good that emerged from the COVID chaos

Yesterday, we had a very successful working afternoon at @freieuniversitaet Eltern-Kind-Zimmer located at the @fubcp. I'm not sure this would work for a long sesh of work, but it did for some hours, and the older one even napped for an hour. Geat help for #AcademicParents!

New blog: We need more research papers on problems, issues and solutions relevant to #academic practice and process. But where are the small grant programs to fund data collection for important issues? #academia #academicchatter #academicparents https://ecologyisnotadirtyword.com/2023/02/10/funding-data-collection-on-inequitable-academic-processes-and-practices/

New record: 5th stomach virus in less than 4 weeks. First kid, than me, then kid again, than husband, now kid again. And there go my plans for the rest of the week…
#Momademia and #AcademicParents, please send good vibes. This is not working.
Oh, this one hit close to home. Thanks for sharing!
I myself had a very hard time last year, very close to collapse. I am now fighting my way towards a healthier balance. But it’s not easy in an academic system with so few permanent positions and in a city that struggles to offer consistent childcare…

Solidarity! I absolutely know how you feel - same here.
From what I can tell we are at least not alone. All #AcademicParents know this. I think what helps best is to not hide away but to stay visible and connect with others.
Because we do care! Join us in 🇨🇱 in September! #GeneRegulation @Momademia@twitter.com #AcademicParents

In addition to numerous fellowships for early-career researchers, we will have child/dependent care grants, to help offset costs for attendees who incur additional dependent care expenses during the meeting.
Join us in September: registration opens soon!

Childcare center just announced a rotation system for January, because they have too few employees (sick/maternity leave/open positions) to care for all children 🤪. Good start for 2023! #AcademicParents
I have to say, ~10 days between rounds of caring for a sick kid really doesn’t feel like enough, especially since the latest detente with local viruses didn’t get me through final grading. Solidarity to #AcademicParents dragging themselves to the end of the term!
Perks of having sick children at home: you can give a talk for work and directly afterwards take them for a short stroll in the sun, while your spouse has to get some work done. I try to see the positive side, but honestly, sick children+work sucks... #AcademicParents
Another summer of potentially futile #GrantWriting. At least I have a little helper this time to make it more bearable! #DP24 #AcademicParents #AcademicMums

As a new academic parent it's easy to feel like a hindrance to your colleagues and workplace. But then I talk to students who are also parents and I realise how much they appreciate that I understand what they're juggling, and that's what matters. #AcademicParents #AcademicMums

This is a daily reminder that Maria #Montessori abandoned her own child so she could get a university degree in medicine and build a career telling women how to be mothers & carers.
So, stop feeling guilty about these hours you spend in the lab, writing, or teaching.

Every time my baby has been sick I get it too. 🤧 How do you care for a sick baby without getting sick yourself? Any tips?
