“There should be no delay between taxpayers and the returns on their investments in research,” wrote Alondra Nelson in new White House guidance on boosting public access to federally funded research. But will the Nelson memo jeopardize academic publishers bottom lines?

"...editors who had put in their resignations described concerns with the journal’s high article processing charges (APCs) fueling Wiley’s profitability, as well as the “breakdown in negotiations” between the publisher and the journal’s lead editorial team."

How common is it in the humanities that an academic journal does not accept "unsolicited manuscripts" (aka article submissions: Don't contact us, we contact you.) and then has a house style that is so prohibitive that it demands to use a specific typeface that's not even included by default in MS Office? To cap it all, it's in a discipline that when it was set up in the 70s, it was intended to break down sociocultural barriers. Culture may be ordinary, but so is gatekeeping it seems.

I'm trying to decide where to submit a paper on computational geometry. As a matter of principle I'd obviously like it to be open-access, but I can't afford to spend several thousand pounds on it, the way Elsevier and et. al. would like me to. On the other hand, I'd also like to avoid places that are so low-circulation that nobody would end up seeing it.

Does anybody have any suggestions or advice? I'll be self-funding any costs.

Weird story on :
(1/2)

A flawed with major claims on human history was published on @biorxivpreprint in early June, is visible to everybody, & even the mainstream media has already picked up on it (edition.cnn.com/2023/06/05/wor).

@eLife has now provided public for it, posted the 4 reviews & put a label on the flawed preprint, clearly stating in bold that the presentation is 'inadequate' to support the claims being made.

That thing when you've been waiting for a submission to get peer reviewed for over a year and the journal has periodically written you to say they are trying but nobody will review it and then you finally get the reviews and they are 1) seemingly responding to a completely different text and/or 2) suggesting you shift the main focus to something you clearly decided to NOT focus on (for obvious reasons).

Now to craft the reply to this nightmare and ask myself again why we didn't just withdraw it and send it elsewhere. But also, to question the usefulness of these reviews and ask myself if they did a single thing to improve the piece. (Uh, yeah, no).

I also realize peer review is a broken system and I myself have declined MANY requests over the past year due to illness as many other folks have since is in fact a mass disabling event and will impact all the free labor we used to do.

But still, had to have a gripe.

I've already started a short list of other open access journals for the next ms which was originally destined for SciRep. Lotta options out there.

Note to self. Avoid submitting any future manuscripts to

Last ms - 6+ months and one review completed, finally told current editor couldn't complete the review it needed to be reassigned, yeah no, we pulled it and submitted elsewhere. Surely that bungle was a fluke, let's try again.

Current ms - paper accepted, yay, but we've been waiting 6+ weeks just to get a license agreement to sign. What's the hold up, isn't this literally their business?!

I got my copy! This comprehensive volume will be an instant classic in the field and I'm really thrilled to have a co-authored chapter in it (with my longtime partner in crime, Diane Negra). If you're at in Denver, check it out at the table, or on their website.
