A Collette's Pygmy Halfbeak (Dermogenys collettei) spotted in the stream at Windsor Nature Park, Singapore, on 8 March 2023. A small fish that, like the very common Stripe-nosed halfbeak seen in mangroves, have a long lower jaw and a very short upper one.

A Yellow-spotted Mudskipper (Periophthalmus walailakae) spotted at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Singapore, on 20 March 2022. I don't see it as often as the more common Giant Mudskipper (Periophthalmodon schlosseri).

A Mayan Cichlid (Mayaheros urophthalmus) spotted at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Singapore, on 9 Jan 2022. The water was still and clear enough for me to get this shot.
This Cichlid is native to Central America.

A Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) spotted fishing at Sungei Tampines, Singapore, on 20 Nov 2021. This was from the observation area in the Pasir Ris Park mangroves. The fish is a Green Chromide (Etroplus suratensis), according to Ivan Kwan, a keen local nature guide.

A Giant Mudskipper (Periophthalmodon schlosseri) seen at the mangrove area of Pasir Ris Park, Singapore, on 22 Aug 2021. Often seen during low tide and usually gets kids excited when they see one.
Mudskippers are amphibious fish, able to live outside water for a while, and inhabit mudflats in mangroves.

Fish photos for a change. 🙂 My first clear shots of halfbeak fish, probably the Stripe-nosed Halfbeak (Zenarchopterus buffonis), taken at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Singapore, on 27 Oct 2019.
Halfbeaks get their name from their mouth: their upper jaw is much shorter than their lower one, an adaptation for feeding on food near the surface of the water.
