Today, I was in an interview and got to say that I was interested in #admiralty #law because I’d read the 21 Aubrey-Maturin books by Patrick O’Brian. Multiple times.

(One was unfinished, but I still count it).

So far I’ve written 10 pages on my Admiralty exam.

I might have gone overboard.

The full awfulness of Dred Scott:

#Admiralty #law developed over 2500 years. Jurisdiction was limited to the high seas and tide-waters like harbors, bays, and river mouths.

This created a problem when the steamship was invented.

A collision would happen on the Mississippi River, and everyone would expect to be in admiralty,. Then the federal court would decline jurisdiction, and the case would be heard in a state court that would apply land law.

Anyone have a source on punishment in the British navy for opening a ship's chronometer?

Patrick O'Brien references it in one of his books, but I haven't found a historic source.
