Some modern poets such as Eliot and Stevens embrace that solemnity.

Prior to that, what we associate with the festive elements of Christmas were activities more reserved for Epiphany/12th Night; this is actually the “official date” of the Adoration of the Magi. Christmas - or at least the season of #Advent - is a more solemn and mystical time.
