This is is a really good idea. I imagine one could even, say, contour the thickness of the balloon & change the shape to a nonspherical antenna.

There is a lot of #stupid required to believe this pitch. They are even claiming the $100 cost covers externalities like carbon emissions!
Sure, some aspects of #aerospace technology have gotten cheaper, but it's not like microchips and Moore's Law – we are not seeing AND WILL NOT SEE orders of magnitude decreases in aircraft manufacturing, safety, and maintenance costs. Much less fuel.
