In recognition of , here are a few of my memorable African reads:

Things Fall Apart
Who Fears Death
Stay With Me by A. Adebayo
Africanfuturism: An Anthology ed. Wole Talabi

In the photo is a spoon with kola nut, which is native to West Africa. We call it “bissy” in Jamaica. It saved my life when I was a teenager.

Gratitude to my Grandmother land (credit to Manbo Jessyka Winston for the term)! I salute you from Jamaica, my Motherland.

Made a start on reading -- A Walk in the Night, 1967. District 6, cafes, clubs, wine, police crimes, prison (a Coloured Corps story), boxing, occasional glimpses of goosies -- but mainly men's stories. It's vivid sometimes hard-boiled, but attentive to texture and the materiality of the urban world, and leaving work for the reader to do to complete or imagine the ends of stories, that are shot through with sharp moments of poetry.

Secure the Base: Making Africa Visible in the Globe by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o

Topics
, , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

For more than sixty years, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o has been writing fearlessly the questions, challenges, histories, and futures of Africans, particularly those of his homeland, Kenya. In his work, which has included plays, novels, and essays, Ngũgĩ narrates the injustice of colonial violence and the dictatorial betrayal of decolonization, the fight for freedom and subsequent incarceration, and the aspiration toward economic equality in the face of gross inequality. With both hope and disappointment, he questions the role of language in both the organization of power structures and the pursuit of autonomy and self-expression.

Each year I aim to read more writing from Africa; mostly catching up. Here's a selection of 100 books from 2020, of which I have read 's Black and Female. The ones I caught up on were - Undine, 1929 written 1870s, also Jade Munslow Ong's book on her; - Stlll Life, 2020 (with this - History of Mary Prince, 1831); Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o - Petals of Blood, 1977; , Mhudi, 1930. brittlepaper.com/100-notable-a

“The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives" by Lola Shoneyin

Stole this off my sister when she visited a few weeks ago. A page turner based on a polygamous family structure and its complex family secrets.

Always looking for good and . Open to more suggestions.📖🔖

Eloghosa gave us a Bible
Akwaeke gifted us with the messiest and most beautiful love story you would ever see. They also bared their souls to us.

There are so many great things in Brittle Paper’s 100 . Plenty that I’ve been meaning to read, like Tsitsi Dangarembga’s collection of essays, Black and Female, as well as things that are new to me, like The White Mosque by Sofia Samatar. There’s lots of awesome fiction on the list too! But nonfiction has been calling to me lately. brittlepaper.com/100-notable-a
