Medieval #Africans Had a Unique Process for Purifying #Gold With Glass
And scientists in Illinois have recreated it.
";This is the first time in the archaeological record that we saw glass being used to be able to refine gold,' says Marc Walton, codirector of the Center for Scientific Studies in the Arts, a collaboration between Northwestern University and the Art Institute of Chicago. 'The glass appeared to be material that was [actually] recycled glass materials … so it really shows the industriousness and creativity of the craftsmen, who understood the properties of gold and glass enough to [use them for] this process of refining gold.'"

The History of Ashanti Kings and the Whole Country Itself is a key text for understanding the history of the great West African kingdom of Asante (now in Ghana). It is also an early--and perhaps the earliest--example of history writing in English by an African ruler and his amanuenses. It was begun in 1907 in the Seychelles on the instructions of the Asantehene Agyeman Prempeh I, who had been in British captivity with his family since 1896, during which time he had acquired proficiency in English.

A History of Niger 1850-1960 by Finn Fuglestad

This comprehensive history of Niger during the colonial period is a work based on primary research which attempts an overall appraisal of the colonial past.
Dr Fuglestad questions the assumption that the colonial conquest constituted a clear break in African history. He traces the main trends of the colonial period back to their origins in the pre-colonial past. He also demonstrates that the power of colonial officials was less effective than is generally thought and that, though French colonial rule was the single most important factor in shaping the present-day societies of Niger, it was still only one of the many contributing factors.

“Djougou Toro” by Volta Jazz is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. I listen to it all the time. And it encapsulates a lost era in #music.
The city of Bobo Dioulasso in Burkina Faso (previously called Upper Volta) in #Africa was home to a pocket of music in the 60s/70s known as Bobo Yéyé. Yéyé being what locals referred to rock ’n roll of the time, when they gained independence from France.
