Great Albums - 1970s: #AlStewart – #YearOfTheCat (1976). Al had roots in the UK folk scene and had bumped shoulders with Jackson C. Frank and the Fairport crowd in the 60s. His 70s stuff is light and slick, but those folk chops give gravitas to lyrics about Elizabethan sailors and Spanish gun smugglers. Plus, his band can really play, as Tim Renwick’s blistering Stratocaster proves throughout. The white tux looks tame, but Al’s no slouch.

Today’s listening is ‘Year of the Cat’, the 1976 album by Al Stewart, which is lovely.
Aside from the title track, this album contains some great songs, such as ‘Sand in your Shoes’ and ‘Lord Grenville’. Listening to this album now, I am struck by how much it reminds me of the style of music that Supertramp was putting out around the same time.
I also recall this album being played a lot when I was a student, for some odd reason!
