Hard to describe how depressed I am feeling about #auspol right now.

The #VoiceReferendum was always going to be a longshot because referendums usually fail. But #Albo's refusal to put forward a model, and the promotion of someone as abrasive as Noel Pearson as a leading advocate have ensured a defeat so bad that the fallback of option of a legislated Voice is unlikely.

In economic terms, Australians will be worse off by the next election than when Labor was elected - lower real wages, higher unemployment, higher interest rates, a more regressive tax system.

The fact things would have been even worse under the #LNP doesn't cheer me up

And just to make the picture complete, the #Greens are overplaying their hand on housing. Should let #HAFF through now, and pocket a win with the $2 billion.

I haven't seen a comprehensive discussion of Labor's new draft platform. But all the changes I've seen discussed involve watering down what was already the weakest platform Labor has ever put forward. Bad news for those who hoped for more from #Albo in a second term. #auspol

If $2 billion for housing is genuinely new (or at least much more than anticipated from Housing Accord), I'd say Greens can and should claim credit for pushing #Albo to it, and let #HAFF through

With the exception of a relatively brief period in April, I've been convinced that the #VoiceReferendum was being mishandled, and likely to fail. Now I'm back on maximum pessimism.

Maybe still a chance, if #Albo
* Pushes out the voting date to December
* Puts forward at least an outline of the model the government plans to propose to Parliament.
* Persuades Noel Pearson his (considerable) talent could be better deployed elsewhere.

We have a so-called progressive government led by someone who was brought up by a sole parent in public housing. #Albo used to be considered a #socialist. He espouses #LaborParty values, yet we have this gulag, #Nauru, a tropical hell hole that costs half a billion dollars per year to detain indefinitely and without charge, 22 refugees. That is $22m per year for each one of these poor souls. And for what? And what else could this half a billion be spent on that would show compassion, improve the lives of Australians and the people who come too us for help?
