After having used it for a few days, I can say that the #reverb is fully exploitable again. There is still a whiteish #noise floor audible when I put all the volumes and the mix to the max, but it is perfectly manageable and the 50 Hz #hum is almost completely gone. #Alesis #music #DIY.

I took the occasion to have a peek at the #firmware (version 1.02). I was surprised to found plenty of text inside. The unit does not have a display capable to show it, so the only thing I can think of is that the firmware was common with other #Alesis products of the time based on the #M4C chip and sporting a more capable display.

I use an #Alesis MicroVerb 4 as an effect module for the Protei. I bought it new in 1997 and I remember I loved it. When I put it back on track, I found it was quite noisy and the encoder was a pain. I found that changing capacitor C43 to 220uF vastly improved the situation (filtering Vdd for the analog part oft the ADC). I also changed the encoder with one that is not identical but I managed to adapt. Now it’s really a nice effect module! #reverb #repair #audio

My first exposure to #RISC was in the #Alesis digital reverbs like the #MIDIverb and #Microverb. Suddenly, thanks to RISC, ordinary musicians like me could afford something as iteratively elephantine as a #DigitalReverb.

It was shocking.

Yesterday I finished my first song made only by recording audio from external instruments (an #Alesis SR16 drumbox and #Casio PT-20) instead of writing everything on a sequencer or tracker.

So far I've found out that, as suspected, I can't play live. My rythm is way off, even when playing a simple melody on top of a prerecorded drum sequence, and I can barely locate notes :da_sweat:

However, I have hope for the future and will keep practising :da_fist:

My new Alesis SR16 arrived today! I've been messing around with it for 20 minutes and I already love the thing.

Bought it second-hand but like new, and the fun thing is... I have no idea when it was made? 😆 Apparently this model has been in constant production since 1990 and it always looks the same. I guess I'll have to open it at some point and check the board model or something.

Looking forward to using it to make some tracks! Working with hardware is fun.

I suppose I should post more about music stuff. I was busy writing a new track yesterday. It’ll be out soon on an eclectic new Synaptyx album, the first in a long while. It’s kind of a retooling of Synaptyx as not-just-synthwave so offers me a little more freedom of expression.
