Something noticed about #Twitter lately, when I go on there (first mistake) and look at the feed, not only is it even more overwhelmingly negative than it was before #Elon, but If you search for one of these issues wear that far right fringe is strongly against everyone else, like looking up #Ukraine or the #ADL, the feed is completely dominated by these fringe viewpoints by far right / #neoNazi accounts.
Somehow, he's managed to get the #algorithm to really push these fringe ideas, overwhelming the mainstream on things that aren't actually hotly debated or even #controversial.

I'm getting very tired of the #nonsense, #twitter
The #algorithm has gone too far. 🤨
I've been a #creative and #technical #writer for decades, and recently took on the role of #indie #author. My 2021 debut on other #socialmedia platforms was an initial success, earning a healthy number of followers and sales of my #books.
Come mid-2022, the #algorithm had other interests, and interactions levels dropped harshly. 😳
That's when I was directed to Mastadon, and I'm suddenly seeing an increase in #followers & #engagement.
I'm here, folks — and I have books!
Talk ta me 🤓🧠♥✍📚

If you ever think it's odd to see random people making non-substantative #comments on your #posts, like, just agreeing with you or whatever, remember that pretty much every #algorithm on every #SocialMedia platform that has one treats comments as the strongest #metric for what should be #boosted, because that's #engagement.
Every time I swing by the #BirdSite to check up on stuff, I try to make comments on stuff I want to be trending there. When I come back to #Mastodon / #Fediverse, I have to stop myself from saying "Right, that's great!" on posts I like. That's even as someone who's always been more active on here than I ever was on there.
The #algorithms of #SocialNetworks condition us to follow their whims, and it can be difficult for people to break out.

Thought of the day: #Algorithm based #SocialMedia works completely backwards: instead of showing you what you already searched for or are interested in, it should show you something new - something you haven't seen yet - haven't thought about yet - expand your world. Shopping cart sites should show you things you haven't thought about buying before, rather than what you already just bought and now no longer need. "Did you know this existed?" No, I didn't; I learned something today.
Hey #Fediverse, is there an alternative search engine whose #algorithm is more #transparent and #anticapital than #Google, which is fair and reliable?

See! Only a few, loud fraction loves chronological TLs. The rest just want to find relevant content easily. 🤷♂️

I think a historic turning point can be achieved if #Mastodon gets some sort of basic #algorithm.
I believe this place would become a lot more interesting if I could see the top posts on each hashtag. 😅
Much like the early days of #Twitter , it's difficult to find similar interests here in #Mastodon . Using hashtags is helpful, but that is also not ideal. Pick a topic that's too broad, you get littered with posts (even if it doesn't seem related). Pick a topic that's too niche and it's a ghost town; some topics don't get mentioned for months.
I understand the #algorithm is different and that's kind of a plus here, but it still needs some work.
I find myself muting a lot of post or people and it's a lot of work for very little content that IS actually of interest to me.
Might be a while before it gets to a more enjoyable state.
For all of #Mastodon’s qualms, the killler feature is timeline curation. Something I can’t live without. I realized that spending 20 minutes on. #threads. I want to be the #algorithm!!!
One of the things I really hate about sites that use purely #algorithm-basdd suggestions or feeds or whatever, is that they are essentially non-deterministic: every time I look at the feed, there is a completely different set of results. If I see something in that feed and want to look back later, or for some reason accidentally get out of that tab, I have to figure out what it was and go find it myself. It's not always the best way to serve content.
#today feels like a good day for a re-#introduction here
My book #TheAlgorithmWillSeeYouNow has been out for 3 months!
It's a near-future #SciFi #thriller about (and this feels really ironic right now) what might happen in #healthcare if medical treatment was determined by a revolutionary #AI algorithm, only the people behind it ignore a fatal flaw/hidden bias in the #algorithm in order to maximize profits

Again in #LinkedIn
I've found a #poll there asking what's better: a long post or an #article
If you wanted more vies, it would be better for you to write a post that the #algorithm will promote.
I'm getting tired of posts abut the algorithm.
There is something else that I barely if at all is talked about: #content which is something you search for.
Screw the #newsfeed and try to write articles people will find useful.

#Mastodon would have been a lot more interesting - if it had at least a basic #algorithm that showed the top posts from the people we already follow (based on likes/boosts). 😇
Instead we have to scroll around, hoping to find something relevant, amongst the stream of less-relevant posts. 🙁
Following 3,000 people - so that I can find 3 relevant/interesting posts - is not optimal. ❌
That's a major reason why almost all platforms have algorithm(s). 😇
The term #Algorithm is Al-Khwarizmi translated into #Latin
The #scientist & #mathematician Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi lived from 780 to 850 AD in Persia & #Iraq.
Also known as the father of #algebra,
Al-Khwarizmi's #book, "Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing” introduced systematic methods for solving linear & quadratic equations.
Using letters as symbols to represent unknown quantities, lay the foundation for symbolic algebra.

Look at the recommendation algorithms of #BigSocial. They generally tune their algorithm to keep people on their platform for as long as possible. They’ve discovered that upset people tend to keep scrolling. So what do they do? Slip in a bunch of posts that are likely frustrating to you. If you’re a reasonable person, you might see a bunch of posts from fascists. If you’re a fascist, you might see a bunch of posts from marginalized people who, like everyone, deserve basic human rights. What does this lead to? A bunch of decent people being harassed by fascists. Why? Because of the #algorithm.
There's been a lot of hype about #BlueSky allowing people to choose their own #algorithm and their own #moderation on the #ATProtocol. I've been trying to put into words something that makes me feel uncomfortable about it. This is the best I've come up with so far:
It feels like a libertarian strategy to take power away from communities and give it to individuals. On the surface it sounds like more freedom for everyone. In the end I expect it will be more freedom for some and more trouble for others. 🧵

This makes me feel better about most of my #git commit messages in my personal code that no one ever sees
